We've talked about the knife but I haven't heard mention of the Bear Grylls Survival Kits. I'm a DR fan and not looking to switch but these could be worth investigating.

Sorry, I can't go with you on this one. I think Bear is a great showman and he undoubtedly has essential military survival skills. That said however, his impulsive antics would get people killed if they copied them in a real survival situation. Survival is serious business, and I would prefer to purchase a kit or components for one from thoughtful, carefull, and experienced people like Doug Ritter or Les Stroud (not sure if Les is even selling anything.

I think there is something you can take from everyone's kits out there. What to do and what not to do. The DR PSP is a great base for an EDC kit. (enough acronyms?)But I have expanded mine by including items and concepts I learned from my own background, reading books like 98.6* by Cody L, this website and others, talking to ultra runners and having a keen eye for balance between worthy item and replaceable item.

I had the issue with this kit that the Gerber represantive had a hard time putting things back together and even had a hard time getting into the part of the fire starter where you store the fire tinder.

If the person who is suposed to play and fidget with these devices all day is having a hard time operating them, how can they be usefull to the person who is under stress and cold and miserable. The key to all survival gear is that it can be used when you are cold, wet, miserable, ect..

Good ideas.. but bad followthrough, and for the record I am actualy a fan of Gerbers gear.

What can I say....it looks shiny and gadgety and hyped up and spacey and clumpsy.
No thanks. I will only buy quality stuff.

Agreed - My seven year old knows him as "The Dumb Guy". We've learned a lot from him but mostly what not to do.
