So our tiny little township is about to get whacked by floods again...so this morning, I took a drive down the road that always floods first, as an informal "look and see" for any obvious hazards and to talk with the residents.

Yards were clear of furniture, garages empty, boats secured and the entire area was as flood-ready as it is possible to make short of removing the homes from the area. People were covering their wellheads with plastic shrink-rap, one guy was having his septic tank pumped out "just to keep the area clean afterward" and I basically had nothing to do.

Makes the job easy when you have people who have been there and done that in emergencies.

Pump the septic? Sounds odd. I like the idea of keeping sewage out of the flood waters but I hope they made provision to keep water in the tank or otherwise keep it from floating. Sewage in the water is bad. But so is having the core of your septic system rise up and take off to parts unknown.

Living in the desert, flooding is not a serious issue here, sort of flash floods. I read DW your OP and that you had nothing to do. She looked at me and said, "I have no clue what I'd have to do."

I looked at her and just said, "Job security for me. I want a raise."

Septic tanks in our flood areas come in a lot of different styles, and his tank was a kind that just a large cement rectangle buried flush to ground level and it's got a wide top with a metal plate over it. River in. Septic out. Into his garage.
