Vegetables may be the only defensive weapon not strictly regulated in DC. I might even brave concealed carry.
You cannot carry a concealed vegetable in the District of Columbia; they were banned in the 70's after a man used a sharpened carrot to open a box sealed with tape.

The evidence seems to be that zucchini causes both bears and toddlers to turn away. But some care must be used when selecting defensive vegetables. Broccoli might have a reasonably expected to work. Whereas french fries, while still technically vegetables, would not.
