Perhaps the start of an interesting trend? Look out, SPOT.

$25 extra a month just to be able to use the service, a bit too much for "just in case" for regular users.

Have you priced satellite phones? They're ridiculously expensive (phone and service).

If satellite technology can be implemented in normal cell phones, then $25 is a steal. Plus, the price will go down as the number of customers and competition increases.

Sounds like the satellite setup that Thuraya have had for some time but with a WinCE Smartphone handset bolted on. Rather than using LOE satellites the Thuraya system uses Geosynchronous orbiting Satellites in a similar fashion.

A comparison between the Thuraya and Iridium handsets;

I hate to repeat myself but like I said $25/month is too much for someone who may just want that function for "just in case if I get lose on weekend trip". The technology still have a long way to go before it's useful for the general population.
