Actually, that's not right - glass worked quite well as a container in sol-air tests conducted in several Third-World countries. Ordinary glass or pyrex containers do not block UV-A light, the main inactivator of bacteria and microorganisms: "However, if PET-bottles are not available locally, it also possible to use glass bottles for SODIS. Kevin McGuigan points out that the UV-A transmission of glass bottles made from boro-silicate glass (99% of all glass bottles) is as good as the UV-A transmission of PET-bottles."
