Yes and no. There are numerous bacterial exo- and endotoxins that are heat stable and may not be totally inactivated by standard outdoor cooking techniques.

My understanding is that there's a delicacy way up north: puffin birds with their hearts pinched (to kill them), and then bury them underground for several weeks to a month or more to let them "ripen".
