My experience with fires in my area has been that you go from FireCon 5 to FireCon 1 in, oh, about 5 minutes or less. It is almost always fire season in Southern California, the notable exception being El Nino winters.

Being aware is everything, particularly of weather conditions. Santa Ana winds increase the devastation potential considerably. These winds will carry flames across major freeways.
