This is a book by Charles R. "Butch" Farabee, Jr. It deals with search and rescue in the national parks of the US from 1870 to 1997. There are plenty of SAR stories in it from tracking lost hikers to searching for downed airplanes and people going over waterfalls. I picked up my copy at Yosemite Park a few years ago. I have read mine cover to cover and am willing to pass it on to someone who might be interested in it. I would prefer sending it to someone involved in SAR in the US. It does not teach techniques of any sort, it just contains stories of rescues and attempted rescues, with various outcomes. PM or e-mail me and I will be happy to send it out; Sometimeskater@aol.com

Hi Skater,
Just an off the wall suggestion regarding your generous offer...what about a traveling book library idea? For instance, ship the book to a forum member who reads it and forwards it to the next member that is interested. That way, it would benefit more folks. Sure, it depends upon the integrity of each involved, however, from what I've seen from the ETS members posts, we seem to be responsible folks. Although I'm not directly involved in active SAR, I would be willing to take a leap of faith and help start things off by reading it and then sending it off to the next person. PM me if this seems workable to you.
Regards, Commanche7

I really like that Idea! How shall we keep a list of books available and interested readers waiting?

minime,
Perhaps a dedicated thread in the Campfire Forum would do it. Since this was initially sparked off by Skater, perhaps he/she would like to carry the thread there and kick off the first round. I would imagine that there are a few of us that may have duplicates or other currently unneeded books that could be added to the list.

That sounds great! I was going to request of the person I sent the book to that he or she offer it up once they are through with it. I see in the thread that minime agrees, so I guess you start it off.
Send me your address details and I will get the book out to you. I am sure you will enjoy it.
I have another book with a crazy name, that is actually quite interesting, despite its name; "How to [censored] in the Woods" by Kathleen Meyer. It instructs as to how best dispose of our body wastes, something that is important, as ugly as the topic is. I will send you this one as well.

Skater,
Sounds great, I'll PM you with info.
Instead of completely starting a new thread in the Campfire, perhaps Chris or Doug could simply move this one? It might take a few days though, I understand that Doug is out of town at the moment.
EDIT BY COMANCHE7 Minime, are you the next in line? PM me with address if so, I should be able to send them off to you within a week or so of getting them.
A gentle reminderfor newcomers (and even for some of us older members <img src="images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> ) for privacy's sake, personal info. is better off being sent via Personal Message or E-mail rather than being posted openly on the forums... END EDIT

Hi Friends,
Just bumping this back to the top again. I received the books and have enjoyed reading them.
The bigger book on survival stories has many stories culled from National Park Archives and other sources. It is an excellent read, and as one reads the stories, you have to truly admire what some of the rescurers went through to save folks from themselves. A real eyeopener in many cases.
The second book is not at all what I expected from just hearing the title. It is informative, well written and certainly provides a wealth of knowledge regarding the subject and the handling thereof.
I've been waiting for another ETS member to express interest, I believe that Minime may be interested....so, I'll PM Minime and find out. If I don't hear from Minime by this coming Wednesday (is that a long enough time to be fair? If not post and we'll try to set up a guidline of notice time) then I'll ship the books to the next interested member that posts in this thread.
It would seem approproate that this thread contain the requests / mailing dates / receipt dates and interest notices of the participants in this book sharing. As menioned above, actual address information is best handled offline via email, PM...
Again, I'd like to express my thanks to Skater for the original offer which makes this book sharing possible.
fyi The shipping is not bad at all, Skater sent the books from California to Florida for $2.26 Media rate. It took about 5 days.
So...hey Mimime are you next? PM sent today. Who will be after Mimime?
Regards, Comanche7
ps Doug/Chris: Would this column be more appropriate in the Campfire Forum?
