While at Rite Aid I spoke with the Pharmacist and put together a small kit. Bandages, Neosporin and a small bottle of "MERCUROCLEAR" the "Clear" Alternative to Iodine. The Q-Tips will be used as disposable applicators -- use once and toss, no double-dipping. This should make a good small kit. Anything worse I'll still have the larger kit in the truck.

I still have tincture of benzoin in my home kit but I've started shifting to superglue. Heavy-duty industrial-rated duct tape also serves many of the same purposes. The shift started when I used tincture of benzoin on myself and had every spot I used it on show up on top of a watery blister. Evidently I'm mildly allergic to the stuff.

I get along better with superglue and it is a much tighter bond that is unlikely to loosen with wear and water.

Basically the same thing as benzoin tincture, but sticks better and doesn't sting if it gets into a wound. Recommended by our very own Doug Ritter IIRC

Good catch Jerry. I didn't even look there. I should have at least recommended calling AMK. They have always been easy to deal with and on more than one occasion sold me items that aren't listed seperately on their website or in their catalog.

So this is an area where I haven't done a lot other than having a fairly well stocked medical cabinet, I think I have about six bandaids in the house.

What would be a good basic medical kit in terms of first aide supplies to have?

I'm not an MD or EMT so I'll offer some ideas for others more qualified to comment... I shoot in competition at least 3 of the 4 weekends a month, and for what I do, a "whoops" is going to take more than a band aid... first my "blow out bag".. 3 pairs of nitrile gloves, EMT shears, Betadine in squeeze bottle, SF tourniquet, Kerlix roll, kerlix gause, hemostatic gauze, emergency (Israeli) bandage,petroleum gause,small LED light, chem light, adhesive wrap, small bottle hand sanitizer. I would like to get some training in a nasal/larangyl airway or reducing tension pneumothorax... outside pocket of pouch has typical FA stuff, cloth knuckle bandaids, tweezers, neosporin... this pouch gets clipped to my 3 gun cart.. in the car I have additional betadine, gel burn pack, kerlix gause and roll, elastic wrap, bottle of sterile saline water and syringe for irrigation, triangular bandage, betagen, triple antibiotics, and new skin, extra gloves and clorox solution in addition to larger amount of hand sanitizer. My kit at home is pretty much the same as the car kit with addition of some temporary dental filling and dental pain gel and some pre packaged sutures/needle holder... I know that Tylenol works well at knocking down fever, and keep unused prescription dental pain meds...Les

Realistically, the contents of your FAK should reflect the training and experience you have received in emergency care. What is in your head is more important than what is in your kit. Realize that many items can be readily and satisfactorily improvised (like splints). It is probably a good idea to have a variety of sterile materials and tape available in almost any FAK. I always keep a few band aids in my wallet where their ready availability takes care of the majority of day to day situations quickly and without fuss.
