Greetings to all.<br><br>I recently saw a picture of a Ghurka soldier training in Oman for the attack on Bin Laden. He was brandishing a machete of some type. It had a swept forward blade, like a boomerang.<br> Does anyone know what it was and how effective it would be? Looked like it would be ideal for lopping a head off!<br><br>Regards <br><br>cmc<br><br>

It is called a Kukri, the traditional machete of the Gurkhas. Highly effective in close quarters. Excellent tool for chopping. Very lethal and needs care in using. It is something you will not to wish to carry unless you can use it effectively, it may hurt the handler.<br><br>Try: http://www.ronbalicki.com/kukriartical.htm<br><br><br>The Gurkhas in WW1, on the Gallipoli Campaign were the only regiment to reach the hill tops in Dardanelles through the trench systems. They were then mistakenly destroyed by allied artillery. Their main weapon was the kukri. I saw a magnificient one in the war museum in Gallipoli. The rest I saw were imitations but even they were superb. It is because of the boomerang shape.<br><br><br>Survive and Protect

You can see another photo right here onsite. My island misadventure featured one.Tthey are available from a wide variety of true Indian manufacture and numerous domestic versions (Cold Steel, Ontario etc.). The bent design is very ancient, and a early solution to weaker metallurgy. It was the first bronze sword carried in Greece. Even modern blades such as the Becker Brute retain a forward increase in weight and belly. Formidable weapons for heavy use. Just don't take your own leg off.<br><br>
