"The crew of a coast guard helicopter have found one of two American kayakers reported missing off the coast of Newfoundland. ... The search started around 7 a.m. Saturday morning when the men activated an emergency beacon."

The water can turn mighty rough out there, strong currents, and it's icy cold. From the sounds of it, the search for the second kayaker is a recovery operation. Not sure if the beacon mentioned was a PLB.

You would never catch me out in the ocean in a little peapod like that, even with a PLB and an inflatable life raft.

I have done both ocean kayaking and canoeing...I much prefer the kayak out on the open water of the ocean.

One of my planned big trips (in 3-4 years) is a solo kayak trip up the BC coast line to Alaska. Without a doubt, a PLB will be taken.

I sea kayaked in Palau. Love it compared to lake kayaking. Though have not done anything fast on rivers.
