First, I hope this isn't a duplicate thread, or repeating something everyone knows about. I know iPhones/apps have been brought up before, but I couldn't find mention of this one.

Anyway, if you have an iPhone/iPod Touch, there's an app for the SAS Survival Manual. There's a lite version for free and a full version that includes the full text of the manual for about seven bucks ($6.95 or $6.99 or something).

I'm cheap, so I just grabbed the free one. It has a text section titled "Essentials" (just started reading through it, seems to focus on what gear to take mainly), a quiz section, some pictures (How-to type stuff), some videos, and some checklists.

Kind of cool.

If the app doesn't include the illustrations, it would lose a lot of value over the book. I think I would prefer printed anyway. I keep the book at home for study/review (makes great bathroom reading!) And I have the smaller pocket guide version tucked away in my hiking pack.

Saying "I'm cheap" and then talking about your iPhone is quite a contradiction. Those iPhones are not exactly bargain-bin priced. My son has one and I have to admit it's pretty neat. But I couldn't afford one (CHOOSE not to afford one) for myself though.

Actually, I am cheap.

1. It's not an iPhone. It's an iPod Touch.
2. I paid $100 for it, not the $300 it retails for.
3. You know what happens when you assume? ;^)

Re: Illustrations. It has illustrations along with the text (well, photos so far as I've seen), as well as photographs and video clips. I'm not sure if the full version has decent videos or not though, as the free version turns out to have only a two and a half minute clip pushing a DVD set.

I have it. I have by no means gone through all of it, but the videos I've seen have been of good quality and usefulness.

I also have the book. If I could only pick one, I might very well have picked the iPhone version for the videos.

Its pretty good all in all, the video and photo's are clear and easy to follow and the information is as good as you get in the book, either the large of gem versions.

However, it sucks the life from your battery and books don't need batteries.

Good post BrianB.

You other guys, lighten up! The app is a convenient way to reference a good survival volume while you're on the commuter train or pretending to listen to your wife. Hopefully you won't need to reference it while underneath the train after it derails in a monumental disaster situation.

Nobody said to ditch your PSK and stake your life on an iPod with its eeeeeevil battery. smile

My finger has hovered over the "buy" button on this one at least once. Thanks for the info.

While online and downloadable information is great for educational purposes, I prefer that my resource type books and information be in printed form. While far from indestructable, they are much more disaster resistant than random electrons corraled in some battery powered gizmo.
I still use a map and compass, despite the GPS as well.
So I guess the belt and suspenders approach works for me.

I always just try to memorize the information, whether from electronic or paper sources. Though I do sometimes leave my brain behind. =)
