PM me for more info. whatever you do, DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY!! Admins: this is not a selling post, I am simply trying to find something currently unavailable in ALL stores!

Just out of curiosity how are the old ones different in form and function from the new ones?

I dont think there is any difference in function, but the durability is ALOT lower than the Polycarbonate. I have no problems with BPA <- Stupid to say but, I dont! I would rather pay for durability once, than Tritan many times! I can tell the diference because if you hit the Tritan bottle, Flicking works... It sounds like a, soft plastic. The polycarbonate version sounds more solid.

Have you tried the white HDPE versions? Softer, but in me experience very durable and they've always been BPA free. Also, they fit nicely inti the GSI outdoors stainless bottle cup, which I like.

Also - If that doesn't convince you, I do have some BPA filled nalgenes around...I'll look.

If BPA is of no concern to you (although if I were you, I would at least be thoughtful), why not simply use plastic soda bottles? Gatorades are my favorite, and I find them highly durable in fairly demanding outdoor situations. I have never had one fail in the field. They are significantly lighter than Nalgenes.

If you're looking for polycarbonate bottles (Nalgenes and others), I suggest you look locally. Postage etc. will eat up too many resources.

Yard sales, second hand stores, ads on local Craigslist and Kijiji, should yield all sorts of local sources. I have pulled a lot of these, brand new, for 29 cents, because most people don't want them. They're not used daily, but they are just fine for my many kits. A dose of bleach and a hot soapy scrub is of course recommended and SOP around here.

There are also a lot of stainless and aluminum water bottles coming into the surplus stream. I just picked up a couple for .99 each, with a promo message, never been used. Perfect.

I dont really worry about weight, I do care about durability. I used gatorade bottles until I had one fall, The only bottle I had, and it busted, deformed and the mouthpiece broke. I was only 3 miles from civilization so it was no biggie, but if that was in the field, I would be screwed!

I also found that the Nalgene 32 Oz. fits perfectly into the side mesh pockets on the Outdoor Products Daypack. I cant afford much more than that!

But, Another reason I prefer 32 Oz. Nalgenes is because the GSI Outdoors SS Cup I have fits them perfectly! I am pretty picky about getting new stuff, I already ahve... Otherwise, I love buying new shiny and useful Gear!!
