In my experience, not as well as any of the other suggestions.

Alcohol may also turn some plastics a milky color. I once tried it on the watch I wear to the gym--trying to somewhat sterilize the surfaces--and the clear watch face turned milky. Awww, man!

Another variation on vegetable oil is brake fluid, used or new. A few times I have found a sticky spot on new gear and have pooped the hood, unscrewed the cover off the brake cylinder, and dipped in a finger to get the few drops it takes to get the job done. Field expedient Goo-gone.

Save the old brake fluid when you replace it and you have a lifetime supply of stickum remover. With brake fluid or vegetable oil make sure you clean it off of any painted surfaced as it will soften and remove most paints if it is allowed to stay in any significant quantity.

Don't be making fun of my pooped hood. Between that and the rust it is all that holds the vehicle together.
