www.snopes.com/http://www.snopes.com/military/lighthse.htmIt did appear in the US Naval Institutes magazine "Proceedings", and it was subsequently quoted by Covey in his book. However, it appeared at least as early as 1992 in a *joke book* prior to either of those.
The US Navy debunks this story on their web site:
http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/questions/litehuse.htmlThe story is funny, but it makes no sense to anyone who knows anything about ships and lighthouses. A ship's captain who couldn't tell the difference between a ship and a lighthouse would have to be seriously incompetent. Even at night, and at a distance, I can tell the difference between a traffic light and an oncoming car.
According to
www.snopes.com,
"Lt. j.g. Ed Westfall, the lighthouse program manager for the U.S. Coast Guard's Fifth District, based in Portsmouth. ... said he, too, had heard the story for years, but he had a different understanding of its origin.
"I always thought," he said, "it was just something one of us Coasties had made up to poke fun at the Navy."
