Or do you think there is just more attention being paid to them in the news? (Possibly because the one in Haiti was so bad)

According to information on the USGS Earthquake Statistics Page it looks like it's shaping up to be an average or below average year. I don't know if there's a certain time of year in which more earthquakes are experienced so it's just a quick estimation based on the numbers provided.

It might seem that there are more since there was so much damage in Haiti and we're just comparing similar magnitude Earthquakes all over the world whenever they strike.

It's just a thought, I could be wrong.

I don't think it's the overall number as much as the severity, and within a relatively short time (21 quakes over 6 in a little over 3 months):

Chile, 8.8, 6.9, 6.7, 6.4, 6.3, 6.2 (all different quakes)
Sumatra, 7.7 (April), 6.8 (March)
Indonesia, 7.7
Baja, 7.2
Solomon Islands, 7.1
Haiti, 7
Japan, 7, 6.5
China-Russia-N. Kora, 6.9
Papua New Guinea, 6.6
Andaman Islands, 6.6
California (Eureka, offshore), 6.5
Taiwan, 6.4
Argentina, 6.3
Turkey, 6.1

Like a bell that keeps ringing...

Earthquakes are caused by global warming causing expansion the Earth's crust. . . never mind grin we get earthquakes all the time. As Susan said, it's a matter of how big. My guess is that this latest string in Baja probably relieved stress on San Andreas and pushed the BIG ONE out a few more years -- hope so anyway.

Don't laugh - I worked with a teacher who sincerely/deeply believed that the 2004 Tsunami was caused by global warming.

I understand that it's a normal or slightly below average year for major earthquakes. The difference over previous years is that more people keep moving into earthquake prone areas (California) and living in sub-standard housing (Haiti). Same problem as hurricanes.
