Blast, I read the articles in my Pop Mech recently, too. I guess this was the article I was going to be interviewed for, but never got contacted back about. Oh well.

... but the voltage will drop to about 12V immediately due to internal resistance you won't get a significant amount of energy out of it.
It will drop, but not before sending some noise and spikes through the $$$ electronics boxes. I'd want to see it on a 'scope before putting it on my car.
I guess I need to add a disclaimer. Do NOT hook up 100 AA's to your car. It was a metaphor, I didn't think anyone would actually try it. Maybe I should have said watch batteries to be on the safe side. Even so, if connected to a 12V car battery my guess is you wouldn't see much.
I was surprised to see a few engines recently with the lugs for a hand crank on the harmonic balancer (the bottom pully at the front of the motor) They were fairly small industrial diesels but I guess in some places they still consider hand starting an option.
Here is another oddity. http://www.springstarter.com/ They make starter motors that you wind up instead of using electricity.

I don't think I would want to hand crank an engine with 22.5:1 compression like most diesels have.

Dads old 1950's John Deer two cylinder gas engine is almost impossible to hand crank, I don't know how they did it.
If it is a John Deere check under the cylinders for decompression taps. They meant them to open for starting and they closed them as soon as it fired up. On the one I had they looked like little water valves with a swing handle.

I don't remember ever seeing them on that engine, I'll have to look at it again next time. Its odd because it has two cylinders but is a 4 stroke engine so it has a 4 plugs on the distributer but two were molded over when it was made and the other two have wires, so the engine gives this putput putput sound as the two clinders fire one after the other then a slight delay for the exhaust strokes for both. It had a 6v electrical system that he converted to 12, put on a chevy alternator, 12v regulator and has the starter rebuilt for 12v.

The articles usually show up on-line about two weeks after the next issue comes out. Just keep checking the PM website.
