Gerber Paraframe Pen Sharpie Gerber multi-plier Flashlight (Husky 9 led with a duct tape fixed switch) lighter (bic with a metal case) chap-stick (original I do not care for the flavored varieties) Bandanna
Kit
(falls under comfort, FAK, and USK)
Altoids tin 8 ibuprofen in pill fob 4 little, 2 big, 1 little and 1 big curved needle 10' black thread 20-30' 50lb test fishing line 4 1000mg tums (wrapped in aluminum foil) 4 cloth bandaids 1 little tube krazy glue razor blade 2 3'' wires (white and black, light gauge, insulated) p-38 (can opener) 4 q-tips (wrapped in plastic) nitro plastic tube with Orajel in it, duct taped closed 1 1/2' of aluminum foil folded flat 2 2x3 gauze pads 4 iodine wipes mini (homemade) led torch (rubber tube, 2 button batteries, tactical eraser, red led bulb) little bundle of picture wire 1 big 1 med 4 small (1 tiny brass) safety pins 1 big 1 med 1 little rubberbands duck tape (10 ft wrapped around a card taped to outside)
This kit is designed to provide me with what i need while out and about. It is not a PSK for the backwoods or a stand alone FAK. It covers my basics for what i need while at work/college. I will carry this kit while in "country" (ie outside city limits but population density is still high) but if i am going into the back-country i take more gear. Pretty much everything in the kit falls into the category of "I wish I had ... at this time."

Here is my PSK. Most typical contents are shown, however depending on area, terrain, weather, remoteness etc, some items may be deleted or added accordingly. The kit barely fits in the bag, but some of the items are put into pockets or attached to pants belt which frees up some room for a few food items such as a Cliff bar(s), dried pepperoni sticks or beef jerky. Other items not shown are a Leatherman Blast and a 6" folding garden saw. Nice little kit. I am not sure how much those water purification tablets can treat...perhaps 1 LT (quart) each? On a hot day, you can go through a lot more water then that. In my PSK seen here, I carry a minimum of 30 tablets all the time. On a 4-1/2 hour, 12 mile intermediate hike on this past Saturday, I treated 4 LT of water and it is not even hot weather season yet.

Izzy,
Are you using a coin tube in your tin?
If not, what is the tube in there?

Another question i have is, How do you guys treat your water? The MP1 says for 4 hours in a dark place. Where is a dark place? Thanks! Has anyone seen canoedogs, or am i just on too early? I want him to post his PSK! And Everyone Else Too!!!

Here is mine: Doug Ritter Pocket Survival Pak Contents. Survival Resources/BePreparedToSurvive.com Emergency Fishing Kit. Orange Mini Bic. Dozen MicroPur Tablets. Doug Ritter PICO Lite. Gerber Mini Paraframe Locking Folder. I keep the tin wrapped in 25' of OD Paracord. I store it in a Blackhawk Industries AR-15 (3 Mag) pouch. Inside I keep an AMK Pocket Medic, Emergency Poncho and an AMK Heatsheet along with assorted baggies and garbage bags. I,ve done something similar, however i suggest that you trade the gerber for a 111mm locking SAK. Much more capability.

With all of the excellent advice on this forum, I've put together a PSK utilizing this caseThe standard AMK, water purification and 2 quart bag fit on one side with a small FAK and other goodies on the other. I'll try to get up some photos in the near future for your enjoyment and critique.

But my kit isn't complete yet!!!!
Of course I try to be prepared and all. I consider myself somewhat OK prepared when doing my day hikes and stuff. But I still haven't arrived at a decent pocket sized PSK... For years I've been lumping this bivy bag around: Which is a piecee of alu-foil covered polyester about 2,8 by 1,4 meters (4,5 by 9 feet). Important features: - Similar to the famous space blanket, but MUCH stronger. Mine is 15 years old. Still going strong.
- It folds in the middle, and you can zip up the three sides, creating a cocoon that is water proof except some will leak through the zippers.
- Strong grommets at all corners plus on the middle of the long side allows for creativity making wind breaks, lean-too, basha and so on.
- The primary use is as a bivy bag as shown in the picture, but you can use it in a whole lot of different ways.
Minus: Price, weight (650 gram) and it is too small for making a good tarp. It is also just barely long enough for me to lie down when I curl up along the diagonal. Add to this bivy a knife, matches, candle and some cord and you've essentially got what was my minimum kit for years. I love the idea of a PSK, but how would I fit my bivy bag in there??? I played with assembling some PSK's anyway just to see how they turned out. After some tweaking I realized my PSK was not a bivy bag in a tin can - it was a PSK in a bivy bag pouch Bivy bag in its pouch at the far left. In the center are the sorry remains of a plastic pouch wrapped with gorilla tape. The pouch gave up its ghost last weeks, only shreds remains. Can't just toss out the gorilla tape, though. The pouch at right is its replacement, but it is not up to the job - too small and it doesn't close properly. I'm looking for a replacement, but it'll do for now. So... right now I have a somewhat less than optimal arrangement of gorilla tape around shredded remains of a pouch, and a sturdy, solid pouch that I'm not happy with. . The most cost effective solution will be to replace the whole enchilada with Doug Ritter's PSK and add and remove some items. But hey - where's the fun in that? What's in these pouches? Snickers bar Space blanket Spark-lite fire starter plus tinder Lighter. Oh, and there's an emergency poncho supposedly in there... I removed it last week and forgot to put it back in Whistle zip tie (more than one, but I seem to have lost some. I blame the lousy pouch for that...) Super glue Needle and thread in a small plastic vial. The needle is pre-threaded with the strongest nylon thread I know, called Grizzly thread. The large needle will accept inner strands of para cord. Compass. Knife - mora 511. LED light - petzl e-lite. A couple of meters with generic 2mm nylon line. Packs smaller than para cord. EDIT: There's a small multi-tool here to. Removed only yesterday to pry apart something, but didn't make it back into the pouch... I need to be more attentive about putting stuff back.Except for the knife and the bivy bag it all fits in the plastic pouch shown in pic 2. That pouch, the knife and the bivy bag goes into the olive bivy bag pouch. Technically I can then fit my bivy bag pouch in a large anorak pocket, but it is too bulky to be comfortable. Usually it goes into a pack of some kind. On my person there will typically be my clothes including gloves/mittens, a hat. In my pocket I have a cell phone, my key ring with a flashlight, money and a ultra-minimalistic first aid kit (sterile bandana, steri strip, band-aid, one sterile anti-bac wound wipe, gorilla tape - this FAK will also evolve somewhat). Most of the time I will have some knife of a sort. All those are vitally important survival items. My pack will typically have some other goodies: - Water bottle
- More cord (para cord or nylon line, depends on my mood)
- More clothes: At a minimum my fleece jacket, but may also have more wind/water proof garments if I'm not wearing them already, dry socks and so on. Depends.
- Lunch or snack
- My survival cup if the mood is right. (Still testing and having fun). See here link
And my pack will typically also have some activity specific items. Such as a stove or grill if we're cooking outside and so on. Some specific comments to my location: Pure blasphemy, I know. - No signal mirror??? I am not particular afraid of experiencing a fair weather survival event where I live. But if I buy Doug's kit I'll carry that mirror.
- No water purification? In the bush I'll drink the water untreated. The risk of water borne diseases is low enough for me to accept it. (In the winter, a snow melting cup is nice and a hot brew even nicer).
- No fishing or snaring? Nope - those are low priority items. May add some low priority zero bulk items later (aka known as fish hooks and snaring wire). Right now there's too much other stuff to do.
- Knife carry is illegal unless you have good reason. And yes, going for a day hike is a perfectly good and legally accepted reason - so I carry my mora on my hip with pride when I go hiking. EDC a pocket knife is not a legally accepted reason.
Still tweaking, still re-considering. Some more recent ideas that may or may not come to life: - An AMK bivy bag would be a huge weight and volume reduction.
- After doing my own stuff with pouches that keeps disintegrating, buying Doug Ritters PSK gets more and more tempting. I love my home made stuff, but his POUCH is so much better and the whole kit is such a convenient size.
- The survival cup concept may evolve into a permanent part of my kit. Depends.
- The kit may evolve into something I perpetually carry on my person, not in my pack. So far I've been happy with just tossing it into a smaller pack when I go exploring, running and so on.
- Doug Ritter's mk5 knife is high on my birthday wish list as a backup knife that fits _*inside*_ a pouch based kit.
- EDIT: A wire saw will find its way into my kit.

sybert777, an idea for you. Many decent kits are published on the forum already. You can search for some of the most recent of them (like through the 2009's topics), assemble a summarizing overview (even if just copy/paste) out of each kit discussion, and post them here (with a link to the original topic of course). I'm sure that would be a very useful cross-reference. And you don't have to re-upload the images, because you can use a direct link to the originals:

My Altoids version. Safety pins, fishing kit, steel wires, waxed jute twine, waterproof strike anywhere matches, water purification tabs, sewing kit, whistle, razor blade, duct tape, dental floss, aluminum foil. Not meant as a stand along, but rather complement my EDC.

Sybert777, I have tinkered on several configurations of Pocket Survival Kits/Tins for some time now. The configuration and contents really depend on your current situation. I’m currently a contractor in Afghanistan and have settled on a kit based on the instructions provided with the RSK Mk5 Knife. For the past 5 months it has ridden in the cargo pocket of my pants. Cheers, W-W

I have two, and a pocket kit, that I will post all tonight. One resides in my jeep-I have a seat cover that has MOLLE points on it, with a bunch of kit bags. That stays with the jeep, and is there in the event I have an unplanned (or semi-planned) night out. The second one is in one of those tins Leigh has-this is my bulky one. That has most everything I need, and goes in my daypack when I go out dayhiking, geocaching, etc. The final one is an altoids tin kit-thats my ditch kit. That always goes into a thigh pocket. I will snap some pics tonight when I get home.

I can see that OldSoldier had adopted my paracord wrapping around the PSK Tin trick from my website. THATS where I got it from! I loved the idea so much, as you can see, I use it on my PSKs & anywhere else I can. Its a handy way to keep a few feet of cord, with the kit itself.

Wild Weasel, how have you liked the Leatherman Skeletool in the field? I have a great Leatherman Charge but at 8 ounces its pretty heavy. The Skeletool weighs almost half as much but I have not heard how well they're working out for people.

Glock-A-Roo
When I first came to Southwest Asia last year I started out with an SOG Powerlock. Besides being too heavy and bulky it was impossible to open the knife one handed. Another general issue I have with multitools is that if you damage one of the screw driver bits, your screwed. The Skeletool offers the bulk and feel of a one handed opening folding knife along with 40+ interchangeable bits allowing me to configure it for requirements, last but not least needle nose pliers. In that there is no wood or trees over here a saw would be superfluous… The skeletool is a handy multi tool I keep on my person for little jobs, if I have anything heavy I get my tool bag out.
Cheers, W-W

I purchased the Doug Ritter PSK and the Doug Ritter mk5 knife. With my usually disrespect for reading the provided instructions I opened the pouch in a way that renders the closing strips useless. This, as well as the utter lack of shelter, inspired me to distribute the contents of Doug Ritters PSK and my kit posted here I now have one very small "always-in-my-pocket"-PSK, and one bigger "always-in-my-pack"-survival kit. This is small enough to always be with me whenever I roam the land, either because some frisbee-and-grilling occations really aren't suited for my half-worn outdoor outfit (at least my wife tells me so), or jogging in my summer workout outfit. It is small, light and flat enough to fit comfortably in most pockets. The blue square is a generic disposable rain poncho. Above that, the Doug Ritter mk5 knife and petzl e-lite. Top row: Lighter, zip-lock bag with goodies and the duct tape from the Doug Ritter kit. Some items from the Doug Ritter kit in a small zip-lock bag: Fire starter, kindling, compass, steel wire (around the compass, barely visible), sewing thread, whistle, thin line. To prevent gas leakage, the lighter has a small piece of PET plastic (cut-out from a bottle) wrapped around the button, secured with a round of gorilla tape. As seen in the first picture, it all fits inside a generic heavy-duty plastic pouch that originally held some food items, trimmed to size and secured with two pieces of gorilla tape. This kit is primary a backup to my larger kit, focusing on shelter (cordage+steel wire+plastic poncho+knife), fire (lighter+fire starter+kindling+knife) and general utility (duct tape, wire, cordage/thread/wire, knife). This kit does not cover hydration, which is not really such a bummer in my location (Where I live, I can drink untreated from "wild" streams, which are virtually everywhere. If pollution from livestock or industry is a problem then help (=people) is very close anyway. In general, being so sloppy about hydration is not exactly recommended practice). Those of you familiar with Doug Ritters kit may miss a lot of items, in particular the signalling mirror. Those items are all in my larger (backpack) kit. I'll post an updated inventory of that kit when I get inspired.

I stressed about gas loss and just used careful positioning of the lighter as a solution which, as we all know, would fail eventually.

I have tweaked this a little since last winter when I took the picture. Took out the mag striker and replaced with a ferro rod and 2" hack blade, better whistles, smaller lighter, replaced tea shown with 'Constant Comment'....
Here's what I have in my PSK. Boreal forests, three seasons. It is meant to supplement what I always carry on my belt or in my jacket pocket or rucksack: cell phone, GMRS radio (only when I have a companion) Ricola natural herb coughdrops(2), good grade compass, large lighter, Leatherman Wave or Supertool, Western 10" cord-wrapped belt knife, light hand axe, 27" bandana(2), nylon mil-spec ripstop poncho, 27 oz steel bottle, Fox 40 whistle, slingshot band with leather pocket.
Here is what you see from top left:
Mil-Spec pouch, orange disposable poncho (multi-use for signal flags, ground cover, tent, solar still), teabags in a heavy zip lock, TP and a ziplock, dry cotton balls and paper tinder (or to write notes) banded packet (containing 8 snelled fish hooks, 2 scalpel blades, 10 butterfly bandages, eyeglass repair kit with magnifying glass, standard signal mirror, three upholstery needles, fabric band aids, 2x2 gauze bandages, double size orange emergency blanket, pencil with 25 ft of 50 pound test black braided fish line). A Fiskars retractable wood saw, Mora 840 MG Clipper, magnesium sparker and striker, a frog spearhead with a half hot-melt glue stick protecting points, 50 ft heavy white nylon mason line, snarewire, whistle, foam bobber, backup button compass, SAK Classic knife with tweezers and toothpick, nylon flag clip, mini-Bic lighter, filter straw, iodine tabs, nine ibuprofin, 1/32 oz antibiotic ointments, duct tape-wrapped film canister with vaseline-soaked cotton balls and two large treble hooks inside, a metal LED light, zip ties, 25 feet of 550 paracord and a steel sierra cup.
When I go out, I stuff one Clif Bar in also......it all fits in the pouch and weighs 35 ounces.

Using the glue stick to cover the tines of the "giggin" fork is brilliant.

Thanks, not field tested but apart from making a dedicated kydex sheat it is the best I can think of. I've made a slightly improved version from old Heinz' ketchup PET bottles, they have square corners which are close-to-perfect fit for the curvature and are just the right compromise between flexibility and rigidness.

Assembling my ultra-mini kit ( HERE ) was super fun and caused me to tinker with my larger kit, which was even more fun. My inspiration was actually slaughtering the famous Doug Ritter PSK (nicknamed DR-PSK) http://www.equipped.org/psp/index.htm and some of that gear went into my mini kit and some into this kit. The philosophy of this kit is that it should stand on it's own with regards to shelter, fire, emergency repair and signaling - and in particular to hold all my emergency repair gear. This kit is first and foremost a kit for my backpack/waistpack/daypack-whatever-pack-I-wear that day. Even if I did allow myself to indulge with a bit redundancy and excess gadgets, it is still small enough to fit a coat pocket. It weighs about a pound or slightly more. It is also very unlikely that I shall wind up with this kit and not having at least a water bottle of some sort. For reasons discussed earlier, I allow myself not to worry much at all about collecting and cleaning water for drinking. Enough talk, let's see what I came up with: Emergency poncho in its small own zip-bag and some really flat goodies from DR-PSK: Survival instructions (DR-PSK) Rite-in-the-rain paper (DR-PSK) Aluminium foil (DR-PSK) Scapel (DR-PSK) Fire starter and tinder (similar to DR-PSK) Mini compass Whistle (similar go DR-PSK) Signal mirror (from DR-PSK) It all goes into the poncho zip bag above. Excesses in sewing: My home-brewed sewing kit along with the needle/clothespin/fish hook-vial from DR-PSK. I put a pre-threaded needle in an old pencil-refill container and wrapped the thread around the base. A second needle is big enough to accomodate inner strands from paracord as sewing thread. Assembling the main bag (zip-lock bag) Heavy duty thrashbag Super-glue and ultra-thin pencil (from DR-PSK) in a plastic vial (came as packaging for some kid toys) About 30 feet of thin nylon line Compass Old leatherman tool Clothespin/sewing kit/fishing kit from DR-PSK. A mini-bic lighter protected with PET plastic cut out from a bottle of Heinz' tomato ketchup. They have such nice corners to protect the gas valve... (Also shown in a previous post, but this picture is much better...) Add some zip ties, a snickers bar (not shown) and 3 feet of yellow paracord (not shown, but you can see it below). The bag is being taped with gorilla tape along the edges and about 8 feet is wrapped around the bottom. Wrapping with gorilla tape has become some of a rite-of-passage for gear that I want to use out in the wild. Here is the final kit (bottom left), along with some of its friends: Bottom right: The ultra-mini PSK I showed HERETop left: My favourite bivy bag, mini-tarp, windbreak et al discussed HERE. A tested, tried-n-true piece of equipment. 15 years and still going strong. Top right: AMK emergency bivy bag. Under the AMK bivy bag is a generic space blanket. Room for improvement- Replacing that multitool with one that has a saw.
- A BCB commando wire saw (the consensus seems to be that this is the only kind of wire saw worth considering).
- A flashlight. I'll add one when it starts getting dark at night again (only 3 hours of twilight at night right now).
- A fixed blade knife (I usually wear one at my hip when I bring this kit anyway, and there's also a Doug Ritter mk 5 in my mini kit).
- Some container for melting snow and boiling water, possibly in the shape of a square box to hold these items
Overall, I'm quite happy about this kit! I can certainly see this kit tagging along on lots of occasions, essentially whenever and wherever I bring some kind of bag and a repair kit could prove handy.

Here are a couple photos of my EDC here in Afghanistan. The bandana has turned out to be surprisingly useful serving as a hat, towel, and its original purpose as a dust filter during sand storms. While I use the Leatherman Skeletool more often than the Benchmade AFO II I think it is kind of cool you can buy switchblades at the Post Exchange (PX) and are allowed to carry them. The old style combat dressing is slim and rides in my shirt pocket. From my Survival Tin I have used the needle and threat to repair my pants I tore on concertina wire, the compass to help align a sensor, the Micro-Light (night vision green) during a blackout (lots of stars here), and the Nexcare Waterproof Skin Cover to cover a hot spot on one of my feet. • Bandana • Leatherman Skeletool • Benchmade AFO II • Old Style First Aid Dressing • Survival Bracelet (6' of paracord) • Survival Tin Altoids Tin RSK Mk5 Knife Photon Freedom Micro-Light (Night Vision Green) Signal Mirror Whistle Spark-Lite Firestarter X4 Tinder-Quik Compass w/lanyard X2 Micro-Pur Tablets X2 Pieces Rip-Stop Tape X2 Pieces of Nexcare Waterproof Skin Cover Heavy Duty Sewing Needle pre-Threaded Extra thread Safety Pin Paper Clip (MacGyver Multi Tool) Snare Wire Update I’ve been carrying this Altoids Tin Kit in the cargo pocket of my 5.11 pants going on 8 months. I decided to give it a once over to see if everything was still serviceable. I was surprised how dented up the tin had become and on opening it everything looked OK except the MicroPur tablets. Rattling around for 8 months the sachets were showing signs of chafing. I could have replaced the tin but decided to popped the dents out of the original tin, but replaced the MicroPur tables with fresh ones. I should be good to go for at least another 6 months. Cheers, W-W

Teslinhiker, how is that bottle attached to your MEC shoulder bag? I have the same bag, but have quit using it because I couldn't figure out a decent water bottle attachment.
