To tell the truth, there isn't really much difference between a septic tank and greywater pit, except the greywater pit dispenses the water into the upper section of soil where the roots of the EDIBLE FRUIT SHRUBS can use the water and feed on the nutrients, and in the septic system the nitrogen drains out into the nearest water source.

Get hold of Art Ludwig's book The NEW Create an Oasis with Grey Water, and check out his ideas on a branched system, draining the different sources of greywater to different areas of your yard. Very clever!

Hi Sue - The idea is to not worry about filling the septic. Our soil report from septic install was ALL CLAY, thus we have poor drainage. I`m sure it was made to account for that, but I would prefer to be safe than sorry
Funny you mention that book it's been on my wish list @ amazon for a few months now. I`ll have to get it, and check it out. Due to how our backyard is setup (sloped) it would be rather hard to have the grey water for the garden w/out crossing/digging around the existing leach fields. From the late 1800's we have an old ditch I plan to run the grey water too after the rock/sand pit it's dropped into, and that ditch will feed my someday to be created pond at the bottom of the hill.
Oh, the planning!
