Here's a link to a story on the P.E.G. Personal Energy Generator.

Claims to have the potential to turn human generated kinetic energy into electrical energy.

Sounds like it was inspired by his hiking on the AT.

It appears they are not being manufactured yet. At $149.00 I think I'll not pre-order, but rather wait until I see a review or two.

Here's link to the specific Website.

No personal or family affiliation with this.

The idea is appealing. I recall having read about a similar device being developed for military use a few years ago. These systems usually sap energy from inertia effects (e. g. acceleration and deceleration the rucksack). Which means that the energy is not for free and people with an efficient walking style get less.
I still may be useful for longer hikes. It would be more reliable than solar power and certainly more practical than using wind power.

Interesting, but I'll stick with cheap, light, reliable solar for now.

I put my name on the list to be notified when its available. I don't know if I would actually BUY one, but more information is fine with me.

Seems to be what amounts to the mechanism that powers a Faraday flashlight.

Would be easy enough to strap a Faraday flashlight to your ankle and charge while hiking. Might be cumbersome, though.

Someone with the right skills should be able to easily hack a Faraday flashlight, turning it into a trickle charger for a variety of devices.
