He seems to have overlooked more than a first aid kit. His knee jerk reaction to shoot the bear was a final testimony to stupidity. The sow was protecting her cub. Shooting would have condemned two animals. Firing what is probably an overstroked magnum cartridge is really beneficial to an allready bleeding shoulder. Moose and Dall Sheep just don't hang out on ancient bear trails, which is what he was on. A simple periodic whistling, talking or making noise would have avoided the whole sorry encounter.

I was thinking if he was walking through the woods, why wouldn't he have heard the rustling of leaves and bushes and realized something was there. Don't bears make sounds that are mainly known only to bears, I'm not saying growling but something of the nature. I really don't know much about bears so I could be wrong.
