This realisation came to me when I moved from Portugal to England – and had to start looking after myself. I had an empty room with just my rucksack. The kitchen was empty with no cutlery at all. Suddenly my Champ with the crossed shield became my lifeline whether it was cutting vegetables, opening tins, pasting mouldy bread with cheap jam or steering in the soup.
I bought some kitchen improvements (one was a pan instead of using my metal mug to cook in) but never was a knife bought.
Now I rent a room at a better place but my new best friend stays by my side. Always.

On a different note I am also very stunned with the excellent quality of the sheath. It is already several years old still no rips or anything. One of the reasons might be because I waxed it with saddle wax which keeps it moisturised. The knife itself is attached to paracord which in turn is attached to my belt with the rest cord tucked into my pocket.

sounds like my story as well, except mine was when I moved into my dorm room in college. I have carried victorinox for about 13 years now and I used my old huntsman all the time. Now I have a swisstool and I cant go anywhere without it. I ALWAYS give out victorinox SAKS for christmas and most people dont even know they actually will like them!!!

I have read the knife laws there are ridiculously restrictive. That is, if you are arrested and one of any kind is found on you, it automatically puts you in prison for two years. Or is that urban legend?

not sure about that, it might add a couple of years on to a sentence i suppose. but as mentioned on another post, as long as it doens't lock and is less than 3" you are allowed to carry it.

here in holland it isn't TOO bad, atleast on paper. On paper you are allowed to carry any folder locking or not with blade lenght up to 9 cm IF the width halfway on the blade is more than 14mm, if it is't 14 mm up to 7 CM. You are allowed to carry them almost everywhere, except on public places, alcoholic serving places and places where a knife has no usses, but to harm someone, this is judged by the police officer and since knife tolleration is pretty low in this sociaty, you really have to give a good explanetion wenn having a knife on you...

I have one that´s similar to the Spartan. It sits in a kitchen drawer and still serves well. I use for numerous tasks. The Victorinox can opener is superior to every other model I ever saw. I really like those Victorinx folders.
When my niece and nephew were born I bought a Victorinox for each of them. They´ll receive it when they´re old enough to handle it responsibly (maybe they can borrow it earlier when I have to babysit and little sister isn´t watching <img src="images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />).

There was one incident where my Champ saved the day.

I was doing a house call and I had a patient where I had to insert a urinary catheter. The cathetet was inserted without a hitch , with much relief from the patient, and then came the time to inflate the balloon on the catheter to hold it in its place and the syringe that I had had a plastic flange which would not fit the port!
I was considering my options and debating whether to rush back and get another syringe (yes, all the syringes in my bag had flanges) when I remembered the Swisschamp on my belt pouch. Out came the minipliers and I broke off the flange from the syringe, all the while with the patient wondering what I'm doing fiddling with a SAK and syringe.
I inflated the balloon and everything else went smoothly, thanks to my SAK Swisschamp.

I now carry the swisstool on my belt, and a Climber in my pocket always!

Cuts Reinhardt's modem conection with a SAK. My favourite story involving SAK was the author Edward Abbey. He was hiking and realized he was being followed. Eventually he was face to face with a mountain lion. He wrote of being armed with a SAK. Abbey did the wise thing, and said " here kitty,kitty" The lion elected to move on.
