Thats the way they do it here in central PA. they use trout hooks and a small piece of red cloth. going that way, most people wouldn't have to add much to their already built PSK. a small piece of cloth would fit into just about any nook or cranny. The hooks and line are already in most of them. If I had to guess, I would think any kind of small pice of cloth could be made into a "fly". Even using a bug, ant, beetle etc found under rock or log would work.

For those of you who cannot wait for a flat frog gig, Danielson Company, Inc. makes a four prong frog spear head that sells for $2.79. The socket is one inch outside diameter and it’s demensions are five and one quarter inches long by one and five eights inches wide. I bought two today at my local BiMart sporting goods store on sale for $1.95 each. Danielson is located in Auburn, Washington 98001-1707.

Danielson frog and fish spears can be obtained over the net from http://www.outdoorsuperstore.com. They have from three to five tines. Over the net, they cost two to three times more, ie $2.25 to $10.00. I recommend searching through the bargain bin at your local sporting goods store.

For those that want a flat spear, just squeze the ferrule in a vice.

Where I go, frogs are not abundant enought to spend a lot of money, weight, or space in an extended survival kit. Therefore I use the smallest and cheapest I can find.

What I am looking for is a small collapsible crawdad trap that I can include in my extended kit. All the ones I found so far are a little to big. Some of Eastern Oregon lakes have abundant crawdads. I keep large crawdad traps in my RV.
