I was just browsing Amazon and noticed that there are new revised editions of the SAS Survival Guide and SAS Survival Handbook, by John 'lofy' Wiseman:

I have the previous versions of both the handbook(full size), and the guide(the mini version), and I'm a big fan of both. I love the compact guide, which is very small but packed with tons of useful and interesting info, and I bring it with me on every backpacking trip.

I'm wondering how different the new revised editions are, and if its worth replacing my current guide with the new one. Has anyone seen or purchased the new versions yet?

I have the old versions of both, and the new versions of both. The differences are almost non-existant. I didn't read through every page, but just glancing through them they appear almost identical. I gave the new versions to my kids so they could learn. I did not feel that I was giving away anything that I didn't already have. I personally would not repurchase the book unless your older copies are starting to fall apart. I agree that these are very good books, but don't expect the new to add much over the old.

The basic principles of survival have been out there for some time. One of my favorite references is [/u]The Survival Book[u], by Nesbitt, Allen, and Pond. Published in 1959, it is replete with examples from WWII that are still instructive today.

While the principles endure, some of the technology has advanced - GPS, LED lights, Avalanche beacons, new synthetic clothing. The section on signal mirrors is basically current, and they cite several successful uses of the mirror in achieving rescue.

Thanks haertig, that's exactly what I needed to know. I'm such a fan of the books that I would probably pay the $8 for even a minor improvement, but it sounds like the differences are pretty insignificant.
