( This was four months ago, but I didn't see it on these forums, and I'm always looking for examples of successful use of signal mirrors)
Two Michigan hikers were rescued on 8/12/2009 after about 24 hours when they signaled a rescue helicopter with a signal mirror in the Holy Cross Wilderness Area near Vail, Colorado.
Exactly. Nobody died, nobody was even hypothermic. The two hikers weren't even out long enough to build up national interest before they blew it by signaling a SAR helo on the first day of the search. Search teams didn't even get a good work-out. I'm surprised it made it past the editor -- musta' been a slow news day.
