Do any of you use or keep a wind up radio like Grundig FR 200 as part of your emergency kit. How reliable are they? I am thinking of getting one. Thanks for the feedback.

A friend of mine sat in a redwood tree for two years with this unit. It's still going strong.Buy it.

The overall size of the radio may be questionable (it's quite tiny) but the performance is excellent. I plan on purchasing another one.

Hi
Are there jacks for headphones on the Grundig FR200?

Thanks

Yes there is. It is next to the external power port on the back.

I have one that stays near my kit. But it's so much fun to tinker with that I have it out a lot. In fact, it got me hooked on SW, so I bought a Satellit 800. But I still play with the 200.

My only concern is the crank handle. I always try to take care when winding it so I don't put any more stress than necessary on the crank.

During the big blackout in New York, mine worked like a charm. The crank up radio/flashlight was the envy of my neighbors. The reception is especially nice since it has a coarse and a fine tuning knob.

The radio runs on regular batteries (AA's), but the crank actually charges a cordless phone-type battery. As a backup I bought a duplicate battery at my local office supply store which can be swapped out if the original ever dies.

I'd recommend it if you need to sit tight at home, or if you have a car. Since I live in New York City without a car, I have a more complicated problem. It seems lightweight for a radio its size (its plastic), but a little big for a backpack with other gear.

The Grundig is an excellent radio at a very reasonable price. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, assuming the first one ever breaks!

I love my FR200 as well. One mod I performed to it was to swap out the light bulb with an LED. Its not as bright as the bulb was but still good enough to read and walk by. It also extends the battery life considerably.
