I was shocked the other night when I went to open an Aloksak bag that houses an EDC tin and emergency poncho--there was no seal left...nothing...nada! The part that the one side locks into (let's call it the female side) was simply stripped, nothing there, just totally smooth. I don't open this often at all, and the last time I sealed it it was fine. I can't even imagine why this happened. It wasn't subjected to heat, the air was out (ie, it wasn't bulging). Anyone ever see this?

P.S. I was so taken aback that I forgot to see if that side broke off and is attached to the other side.

That's a first for me. I've never seen this happen, and I have about 50 Aloksak bags throughout my kits and house. The most used bags are on my PSKs and FAKs.

I've only had one Aloksak fail and that was because I packed it too tightly with bandages, gauze and pads and then threw in forceps, EMT shears tweezers and a few other tools.

If it's been less than 30 days, they have a replacement policy.

Nicodemus--

Yes, this was very odd. How did yours fail? Seams? Locking portion? Puncture? Mine is more than 30 days, so no go on replacement.

I bought a package of them from REI a year or so ago, and two of them separated on me the same way. I wonder if there was a QC issue?

I have had high failure rates with all of mine about a year ago. I've had water intrusion and seal failures on 90% of the bags I have plus a degradation of a few of the bags. Weather I had a bad bunch or whatever, I had purged them from my gear and went with water shed products. Ive had no failures on these bags.

Thanks everyone for your input.

oldsoldier: The two sides did come separated the same way yours did.

falcon5000: Those look like good bags. My EDC is for traveling on the subway to my job (not a BOB), so I wouldn't be carrying something like that. But I passed the site onto an officemate of mine who does a lot of camping and some water adventures. She thanks you...she'll be showing her hubby!

Some people swore by these bags so I thought I'd try. If they fail on me it's not a catastrophe, but for anyone in the wilderness/water, it could be a major problem. I would never trust them.

It's like the s-biners I bought--once I got them I realized how fragile they are. And McGizmo clips and the like have failed in my pocket--my LM Squirt always disconnected. I guess you have to try for yourself to determine the faith you'll have in them. As an aside, the one clip that has held in my pocket is the one that comes with Doug's Photon Freedom light. I don't think the "spring' is any tighter than other clips I have, but it is round. Maybe it's a "center of gravity" problem with the other clips--too narrow, no where for the items to go.
