I am looking to pick up a few pairs. Has anyone had good luck with a certain kind, and which ones should I stay away from? Also if you know the battery size, qty, life. Thanks!

Hi T Co,

What sort of outdoor activity and conditions will you be in? I've done a lot of downhill skiing and currently snowmobile in very cold conditions. My foot warmer of choice is the Hotronic M4. This is basically a disc which will be positioned under your toes. Worth the money IMHO.

Craig

Never used heated socks, do they work well? Why not simply obtain winter boots?

I am reminded the movie Shoot to Kill with Tom Berenger and Sidney Pottier. Sidney is a citified FBI agent on the tail of a diamond thief and enlists Berenger, a outdoor guide, to help him.

The agent shows up with a Kitchen sink sized ruck and Berenger starts going through it lightening the load. Tossing heavy items here and there. (A true comic relief moment in the movie)

At one point Berenger says, "What are these?" Holding up this large packet.

The Sheriff driving Sidney around states, "Battery powered heated socks. The latest thing."

The shot shifts to Sidney mid screen and the socks being tossed through the frame, passed him and onto the ground.

HAHA. LOVE THAT SCENE.

Already have some boots but they don't have a high fill count. Dad suggest socks would be cheaper to get for the first few outtings than a pair of boots as insulated as his while I'm deciding if hunting is something I want to pursue.

Sorry, no experience with heated socks . . . they don't pass my crazy-gadget filter. (I love gadgets, but heated socks??? Not my cup of tea).

When stationary it is very, very hard to avoid freezing. If your toes are cold it could very well be that you need a better hat... (Your body will not allow your head to cool down, but will happily sacrifice your toes in the process...).

That being said, you can do A LOT of cheap & improvized solutions for keeping your feet warm. Something as simple as not standing on cold ground or snow makes a huge difference(a ground sheet, newspaper, whatever). You could stuff some fleece garments into a bag - any bag, including thrash bag will do. When you're at your post just put your feet (with boots and all) into the bag. As long as you're not moving it'll work. (And when you're moving you'll generate more heat and speed up the blood circulation, that'll keep you warm). You can also do a lot of improvization with duct tape and whatever material of your choice as makeshift insulation. At the other end of the scale you have dedicated solutions like overboots (most of those you can even walk with), but the good ones are so expensive you're probably better off buying warmer boots. When you do buy new boots, remember to allow ample room for an extra pair of socks.

Remember to eat and drink, preferably hot drinks.

Anyone try the Grabber Foot Warmers?
No batteries or power hookup to worry about.
