Reading the thread on bug-out bike got me thinking (can be expensive).
Like most North Americans, I rely too heavily on the SUV to 'get outta Dodge'.
Again like most, I live in a city which is located on a river.
See where I'm going with this?
Small boat or canoe.
River valley full of game & fresh water.
Low effort travel.
Whattaya think?

A small, under 24', tow-able boat small enough to launch single-handed might work quite well. Something with a retractable fin and flip up rudder, so they move out of the way if you ground out, sounds good. You could have a small outboard and sail. That would give you a live aboard capacity of perhaps a week for two or three people as long as everyone was on a first name basis.

If your plan was more along the lines of emergency escape and getting away from a local emergency then a much smaller boat might work. Anything but the smallest boat will give you many times the carrying capacity of what a small group could carry on their backs.

If the emergency has to do with rising water a boat might be much better than any SUV or truck. Of course if that water is going to be moving fast, like near a dam that fails or tsunami, you need some way to avoid being swept along and bashed to bits.

A good second option ( after driving.) Might be prudent to consider having boat launch locations and a river map handy.

Bow River is just down the hill.
A few miles downstream is a weir that has claimed many lives over the years... so yeah, a river map is a good idea.

Add a BOB and any boat can be a bug-out boat.

I chose to live on a sailboat.

I've always thought this is an excellent idea, especially if you live near the ocean or large lake. While the highways are jammed with desperate people the waterways will likely be open and allow for far greater mobility - and safety from the hoards. Essentially a giant moat between you and them.

Be prepared to repel boarders!

for some reason this brings an image of the POWs happily rowing their way out of Germany in 'The Great Escape'.

Take a look at "Vest Pocket Cruisers". These are 12-15 ft sailboats and can acommodate 2 persons for a week or so.
