Slip a bit of thin walled plastic tubing over it.
Or that expanding finger-trap nylon mesh stuff you get as packaging around shafts.

Thanks a lot, that is a great tips that I'll try out smile

I've never tried any of those metal or rubber straps under the foot, but I can tell you the ordinary bungee chord on my gaiters is NOT really abrasion resistant... I think the only reason they manufacture it this way is a) because it's dirt cheap, and b) the bungee chord is so easy and cheap to replace.

Even in snow it will wear out because of the abrasion of the shoe. (My skiing boots are pretty solid, with rough edges).

I wear a pair of these low, uncoated gaiters whenever I'm backpacking. They keep the scree, dirt and debris out of my boot-tops, and keep my feet cleaner and more comfortable.

(They are lower than they appear in the photo)

I always found wool puttees to be much more comfortable, warmer and breathable to wear and even gave better ankle support than gaiters. They are very lightweight as well.

But new wool puttees are increasingly difficult to find.

They are wool so it does not matter if they get wet. You still stay warm.

As for the weight? That is of no concern as they are worn by a manly Brit.
