OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo........ that depends a lot on the mission, the time you are supposed to be in the field and a million different considerations. Gear taken may range from socks and underwear to change up to explosives, from a tin can opener up to a "boresight" or thermic sights.
Best way to find out is to find an army nearby and go and serve there for a while. You will learn in no time how those lists are made. Remember that a way of thinking is more important than a gear list.

Give em all to me! I love gear lists, because they're filled with, ummmm... lists of gear <img src="images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
I saw a news report about American soldiers in Iraq, And from the video footage, they seem to carry a LOT of stuff. I was just wondering if it was all ammo and weopons, and...well... I was just wondering...

Lists make me laugh. We used to get new platoon leaders who would insist that we carry stuff on the list because well, it was on the list. Like our mess kits and entrenching tools for instance. Granted certain checklists are important for making sure the troops have what they need.

Mate, those lists are meaningless if you are not trained properly to get the most out of those things.
You feel at home in the field? That thing cannot be learned thru "lists" or manuals. Your body & mind must be able to adjust to those conditions and get the most out of them to your advantage. That's the aim of "training", and that means rivers of sweat, muscle pain, barely some sleep, miserable feeling.
Otherwise you are dead. Ok, useless.
Those who survive are the kings of the hill.

Ok. Only part that should contain your ammo is LCE (load carrying eq) or the "suspenders with the belt. You have two ammo packs holding 6 30rd mags and 4 grenades, two canteens, gas mask, bayonet, first aid kit and compass pouch. That’s your basics. Big ALICE pack will have your half of the shelter, pole, mat, ponch, chem. suit + hood, trenching tool, sleep system, and spare socks, undies, toiletries, private stuff and clothes; all this is put into watertight bag. Pack can be ditched and you have to have all the important gear on you. LCE is always on you during combat even if you got rid of your pack.
BUT
Depending where you are (location) and what your MOS is (job) or what the mission is parts of your pack will be replaced and changed. For example you don’t need a 0 degree sleeping system while fighting people in Georgia climate. On extended missions you will have to put extra ammo there, maybe MRE packs and hope you get re-supplied. If you are a medic besides your own stuff you will carry med pack. If you are a water pur. unit you will have your chemical sets. GIs buy a lot of crap when they leave for war in the PX store . And most of that stuff gets ditched in the field later on because every pound counts.
Being on the field during FTX (field training exercise) is great because it basically is like a big camping (sometimes). You can bring all the stuff you want, you get fed and on top of that you know when you coming back to the barracks. Being in the field during war is horrible since everything is uncertain. And than you realize that things you took for granted such as foot powder, sweat bands, deodorant, soap and smokes are hard to get and you regret that super sniper face mask (useless) took space of the foot powder that you need so much.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I enjoy looking at what people carry with them personally so that I can try see how they think, and what their priorites are.
By checking out what other people carry, I can perhaps use some of their ideas and try them out with my own systems. I would never go outdoors with a completey new gear-system based on a list of what somebody from a different culture, experience level and with a different purpose in their activities has decided is right for them.
Equipment is nothing, if you don't know how to use it, properly.

It doesn't matter whether you are a hiker or a soldier you can load yourself down with the best equipment in the world but when you need it it probably won't be there knowledge is the key to survival and the beauty is it doesnt weigh anything
Ray mear Hearing this gets me motivated to get in the field time and time again

Woft, I am in the US Army and have been on active service for the last 12 years, I am sitting in tent typing this to you now close to the Iraqi kuwait border, I have been in this god awful country for 10 months.
There has been alot of talk on the forums about military gear and load lists, military load lists do not carry over to the civilain side at all. We get specific orders for specific missions and carry the gear that we need for that job. If there is one basic list, it would be very short, here's mine: Benchmade AFCK w/spyderco ceramic stone, fire, usually a couple of bics, FAK of my own, not the armys field medical kit, surefie Z2 with spare batteries, no name, small led light, 550 cord, sewing kit and leatherman wave. This is in addition to the gear that I am required by the army to carry, this is just the junk in my pockets, I also have a camelback hawg that is usually pretty close by that has more gear. Remember with a M4 and a basic load of ammo which is 210 rnds with magazines, load bearing vest, flak vest, kevlar helmet, pro mask, chemical suit and water there isn't much room for anything else if you want to be able to move. Chris

Amen Dave B, you the man.
Equipment is nice but at the end of the day we've got where we are (the moon, Voyager, genetic engineering) on the back of the Mark One Human Brain - look after it regularly (books, manuals, films) and it will look after you....
