Thanks everyone. This search-for-a-bag effort was mostly because I wanted to equip my new hiking enthusiast away-at-college daughter with some of the basics.
I happened to stop by the Army/Navy store this evening and purchased a few items - HeatSheets Emergency Bivy, Coughan's glass signal mirror, Storm whistle (they are much bigger than I expected!), a basic orienteering compass, waterproof match case (for cotton/vasoline), orange 550 paracord. I still need to buy more items - Frost's Mora Clipper knife, Firesteel, MicroPUR, LED headlamp, etc. You can see I'm not concerned about creating an ultra-mini sized collection.
I plan to put it all in some yet-to-be-purchased waterproof container and then put that inside a hydration pack and give it to her for Christmas. I'm thinking of this Camelbak pack:
http://www.rei.com/outlet/product/791159 Pretty cheap at the REI Outlet and I saw one at the Army/Navy store and I was very impressed (the Army/Navy price was too high though). It was a very nice size for 3-season day hiking.
I still want to buy some kind of large poly bag (for myself now), but the daughter will get the bivy for now.
