I am all set to buy the Yaesu VX-7R. I just have one question for all the radio experts out there.

Is their a difference, advantage, or disadvantage to using a scanner with the entire radio spectrum versus using a shortwave radio for picking up shortwave signals?

Take out any effect the antenna would have because I can hook any antenna with a 50 ohm impedance to this radio for better reception.

Take out any effect the lack of trunk tracker and digital decoder would have.

My question deals more with the actual circuitry of the radios themselves.

I can't think of any disadvantage to getting an all-in-one radio for the parameters you described.

I used to have an AOR 1000 scanner/receiver that was almost 'DC to Daylight" in terms of reception range and it worked very well. Yaesu is a great company and I'm sure their product will perform just as good if not better.
