I was recently hiking up in mount ritcen in arizona and a Mother bear and her cub were macking on a carcass left behond from a cat.
she was about 15-20 feet away when i spoted her (i was very exausted from 20 mile hike) and i was only 4 miles away from car. i know how aggresive a mother bear can get so i was being cautious. i shouted at her because she was like 5 feet away from the trail and i was on a very steep part of the mountain. no other way around. i started to shout and wave my arms and a bandana and she wasnt moving. i had forgotten my sidearm and bear spray at the house ( DOH! ). i continued shouting and she stood up on her hind legs. i was very nervous at this point being very exausted and cant put up much of a fight. i took my pack off and was ready to use it as a shield. my knife was not even worth getting out, swiss army classic. so i picked up a fairly large rock. i took about 15 steps back ward and watched the bear. she was getting agitated and started to approach. very nervous at this point. i chucked the rock at her but missed ( on purpose, she is after all, just protecting her cub from potential threat) she paused and stoop up again and did a weird grunt sounded like a deep burp. she turned around and called her cub and they slowly maid there way down the trail. it was a very frightning experience and thankfully she lost intrest in me. i seen her again on the traik but she was far ahead of me she was a beautiful shight.

next time i wont forget the glock of bear spray!!

Ron, Find a book called GRIZZLY YEARS by Doug Peacock. Black bears are actually more dangerous than the big grizzlies. It takes courage to appreciate a bear's rights while in such a situation. How people interact with bears also affects the individual animal's future dealings with people. You did well. I am sure mother bear is in a dugout tonight, admonishing her cub, "talk about an annoying hiker."
