Best Buy is closing out their stocks of Garmin GPSmap 60CSx units in store only.

Yesterday it was $289.00, today $195.00. The salesman yesterday warned me to wait until today to buy, now I understand why.....

Damn. Nice. I seriously considered that unit but got the DeLorme PN40. However the 60CSx is an excellent unit and thats a great price.

It's great for walking but on ANYTHING that moves you have to stop and concentrate to look at it.

For backwoods exploring (on trails) I plan to get a Lowrance unit, like they use in the Baja races... navigating while driving saves time, lots more fun too! Stopping and looking for 20-30 seconds is one thing, but to stop and scan and find your place on a TINY screen SUCKS!! Especially if you are going 10+ miles then you scan a huge area and can lose your spot easy, etc...

The mounted computer in the truck has GPS tied to MS Streets and Trips (cheap version of MS Map Point). MS S&T Lets you import info from other MS Office programs (namely MS Excel), which is nice when you have hundreds or thousands of GPS locations to chart on the map.

I tried the road feature last night, and you are right..... Not so much.

I remember someone mentioning lithium batteries not working, and there is no option for lithium in the menu. Will they work with the unit set to Alkaline or NiMH?

As I understand the voltage on lithium AA batteries is slightly higher than alkaline. That extra voltage is the issue. I wonder if you used the lithium AA's in a flashlight to work the voltage down to the 60CSx spec. . .hmmm.

The last pack of Lithium Energizers I bought specifies 1.5 Volts.

Yes, it's just that lithium AAs have too high a voltage initially. I just measured some at 1.8v, despite them being rated for 1.5v. That's too high for the GPS.

Using them in a D10 torch for 3 minutes on high each dropped the voltage to 1.5v, which my GPS60cx would accept. 3 minutes is roughly 5% of how long they should last in that torch. I have known the batteries to recover their voltage after a while, so although I try to keep a set of pre-used ones for emergencies, I wouldn't be too surprised if I had to repeat the procedure when I came to use them.

It's definitely something worth knowing about in advance, if you plan to use lithiums in the field.
