After reading this post and going through my various pockets... I realize that I may need help.... I carry 5 blades in various sizes and shapes. I have always carried a pocket knife since my very first Barlow that my Dad gave me when I was like 9 years old. Currently I carry a Buck Odyssey liner lock w/ a 3" blade. I keep it tucked in my waist band in the small of my back. On a key ring "tool/survival kit" i carry a Leatherman Micra, and a Schrade lock back w/ a 2-1/4" blade. On my VW keys I carry a small SAK like knife made by Buck, small blade, scissors, etc. Then in my wallet I have a fiberglass thumb dagger or lapel knife. I don't ever remember thinking about carrying all of these. It has just kind of happened that way! Anyway, whenever I turn out my pockets for bed, my wife just shakes her head.... (But guess who is the first person to ask for something on my ring or to borrow my knife!)

I used to empty my pockets and hang up my pants before bed, but I gave that up. Here's why: What if you suddenly have to leave your house in the middle of the night because of a chemical spill, or maybe the smoke alarms go off.

I don't know about you, but I'm not at my best at 3 AM, I'm at my worst.

I keep a lot of stuff in my pockets, and trying to remember what to take when I've just been rudely pulled from sound slumber...well, I couldn't do it.

My wallet contains much of my life, and should I not remember to grab it when I'm trying to catch the cat, things would be from bad to worse.

My solution is to take off my jeans -- and leave them in a heap on the floor right next to the bed. That's right. I take care of turning out the pockets in the morning, when I'm wearing different pants or whatever.

If something goes wrong in the wee hours of the morning, I slide out of bed, pull my jeans on, and I'm ready to roll. I've got my wallet, ID, money, and credit cards.

As far as pocketknives go, I'm caught in an eternal struggle. I'm always adding and subtracting and so forth. I really don't use that much on a daily basis.

I currently carry in my jeans a custom-made two-bladed folder that is a work of art as well as a knife, a Victorinox Midnite MiniChamp (it's useful and looks like a toy), and my SwissTool R/S is on my belt.

In my jacket pocket a convenience keychain holds a Leatherman Micra. I don't call it a survival keychain because my needs are not "survival" oriented in the true sense of the word. It really is a matter of convenience.

I like having the SwissTool around because every so often I really need a pair of pliers. Also every so often, someone needs heavy duty cutting and the MiniChamp won't cut it, so to speak. The SwissTool never offends anyone. They "ooh" and "ahh" over it and marvel at its sturdiness.

I forgot to add, I'm curious about your "fiberglass thumb dagger or lapel knife."

What can you tell me about it?

It's more of a novelty than anything else really. I used to work in a press room for a printing company where a plain edge blade is just another tool. When I transferred into the office I thought I was going to be lost, But as it turned out, there was another Gentleman who had a lot of the same interests as me. He seen my Solitare hanging out of my pocket and asked, when I pulled it out and he seen the rest of my "EDC Tool Kit" He just smiled and pulled out his! When Christmas rolled around we all drew names for the dreaded Christmas Office Party, he drew mine. The day of the party I had to go visit a customer in the worst snowstorm PA has last winter. I had an accident that morning, and I was in the foulest of moods. I got back late around 10 pm to the office and on my desk was a small package. In it were two clear plastic pressure sheaths and a lapel dagger. It made my whole day. So maybe thats why I carry it. I don't know. But it makes me smile and I think it's just plain cool. It is a copy of the lapel daggers that Brittish spys used in WWII. Small, the whole thing in the sheath is about 4". The blade is about 2.5" and the "handle" just under 1.5". I sewed one of the sheaths to a piece of card stock and have it a credit card slot of my wallet. I could take a picture and send it to you but I don't know how to post it.

I searched for a lapel knife on the Web. The only real hit I got said they would be sold to Law Enforcement only.

hmm ;looks like the lapl knives that they used to issue to the SOE (special opperations executive) in WW2. the original ones were made by mappin and webb i believe, a london based jewler to the royal familly no less. i think thats what i read in a large book on the SOE and its wartime opperations.
apperently they used to do things like test fire silenced weapons across the dining hall without telling the dinners, in order to check the effieiency of the silencer at damping the noise!
