I am a school teacher(shop) and I always have at least one pocketknife and a folding multitool knife on me. I also keep a nice hunting knife in the truck and usually have a utility knife in my office for doing various types of jobs. Of course, if I need to, I can always use a skilsaw or chainsaw.

I know exactly what you mean regarding comments. I've actually convinced someone that my Kershaw liner was an executive letter opener. Appearance is everything. BTW, cardboard will dull a knife very quickly. Regards, Keys

One of these days, I'm going to have to find out how one would sharpen a Spyderco Dragonfly and Cricket (both pain edge).

Now I try to carry the Cricket at the office, but use only my Midnite MiniChamp II (tiny thing looks more like a toy) or my custom-made folder in public (when someone is watching).

Hillbilly,

I am impressed that AK allows teachers to carry knives in schools. Do you get special treatment because you are a shop teacher? Or can any teacher carry a blade? Here in MD you can't even draw a picture of a gun or knife or you will be tossed out on your butt, and probably sent to counselling.

I have fond memories of my shop teacher in 8th grade. He taught us how to start fires with flint and steel and bow drills, and various other survival skills. He claimed he would go out into the wilderness during the 3 months of summer they were out of school and just live outdoors. I have no idea if it was true or not, but he knew his stuff. I always thought that was the coolest thing. I guess it stuck with me.

Greg

Greg, & everyone:
I have never been told that I could not carry a knife at school but I really do not know if other teachers have been told not to or not but most male teachers I know carry a pocket knife. My multi-tool pliers are appreciated by several of the other teachers because I have used them to help them. If you think about it though, Home Ec has many more accessible blades than anywhere else. I even have paring knives etc, for cooking for various events during the year.

The MiniChamp gets used all the time, but really, I think I'm going back to a Classic because of the width factor. The things I use the most are the regular blade (for box opening), the scissors for all kinds of stuff (but mainly nail trimming!), the light (for keyholes in the dark), the toothpick ('cause I have funky teeth), and the tweezers (which the MiniChamp doesn't have). Occasionally I also use the pen (but this is not particularly important to me). Oh, the MiniChamp does have a bottle opener...

I don't usually wear the Wave on my belt because it's too heavy for that and I don't like the appearance of too much stuff hanging from my belt. As I'm a technology consultant, I have a lot of gear to carry already, but also, people don't generally care when I am wearing the Wave, because it mostly gets used to open equipment boxes (knife and #2 philips). So mostly I carry it in my briefcase.

Sorry about the late reply, I haven't been on in a few weeks...

Daily I just carry one, my Gerber AR 3.00 BBS but if I'm going anywhere that's not pretty close to my house I will add on my trusty LeatherMan Wave, but if I'm traveling to somewhere like Walmart or K-Mart I might just strap on the BK&T for good measures. <img src="images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I always carry my victorinox Champ. Even to school. I tried not too but I didnt have anything to peel my orange with. Anyway as soon as I need a knife my right hand automatically goes to my back-right hip and when it is not there... Basically just irritating. As well when I am cooking (Its the only cooking knife I've got-its the only knife I brought with me from portugal) I use it. Which I do strait from school

In the UK we would be in deep trouble if we were found with four knives on us. Even one can land you in serious trouble.
I try to get round this by carrying a Wave (which looks more multi-use) and in an 'enhanced first aid kit' I carry a small locking folder. Obviously when you're in the wilds you can get away with a lot more.

Well that explains hard time I got in Amsterdam... I was waiting at the corner for a friend of mine and two cops approached me and asked me what's on my belt.I was carrying Wave and small Boker so I told them. They were strict about it and told me that it was illegal and I should remove them. I took them off and threw them in my backpack. They explained to me that I have no need for a knife in the city. Maybe it was me standing on the empty street on the corner after dark or maybe it really was the law but I've seen nobody wearing anything on their belts. Still I found it weird but gave no argument since I was a guest in their country.
