How many pocketknives do you carry daily?

I'm trying, once again, to reduce the number of pocketknives I carry every day.
Right now, I carry four. A lightweight Spyderco Dragonfly in my right rear jeans pocket, a Victorinox Executive in my left front jeans pocket right next to a Sam McDowell custom-made two-blade folder (a gift with high sentimental value), and a Vic CyberTool 41 on my belt.
What do you fine folks think? Is four too many?

Spyderco Endura clipped to my front right pocket. SAK fisherman in my front left pocket. Leatherman wave on my belt. I don't usually want for a blade or 5!

you should carry as many blades as YOU feel comfortable with.
i only carry a Wenger exsecutive and a Vic Swisscard most of the time, so i won't get in to trouble at school or other public places. Wenn i just go somewhere, where i can carry blades i will add mine Swisstool X or/and a opinel #7. I don't need a one-hand openable knife for most jobs, so i don't carry one.

Have you ever lost a knife that you carry in your back pocket? I have heard that some make catch and fall off.

I know I've said his before, but you asked...
The usual suspects I carry most everywhere:
1. Victorinox Midnite MiniChamp II 2. Victorinox Money Clip 3. Leatherman Wave 4. Gerber Harsey Air Ranger II (plain edge) 5. Benchmade 100 River & Rescue (plain edge)
These are also supplemented by the rest of my collection when circumstances demand, like my SOG Access Card...and there's a whole bunch more...

Large Sebenza right front pocket and Wave on my belt. I really want to get my hand on one of those Spyderco Assist Rescue (reported by Doug from Shot 2003) folders with glass breaker but it seems that for now they only make it without.

If the knife has a clip and I attach the clip to my back pocket, then the clip will sometimes get caught on whatever I sit on, house sofa, office chair, or car seat, and then the knife will kind of slide off when I get up. Otherwise, no.

I carry a buck crosslock, a gerber mutliplier and a Leatherman Micra. A small Puma folder sits in my kit. When I go biking, I have a plain edge 4" Spyderco folder and a Letherman wave. In my FAK is a pair of scissors and a seat belt cutter. I also have a fixed blade knife in my wallet. It has has a 1" plain edge blade. When I think that I need it, I also carry a fixed blade knife. In my biased opinion four knives are not too many. Maybe this isnīt the place to hear that youīre carrying too much equipment anyway.

May I ask what make and model of knife you carry in your wallet? I've tried carrying the Gerber Micro LST in my wallet, but even that tiny locking folder feels too thick.

Itīs a handcrafted knife with a drop point blade. The overall length is about 3 1/4 ". Half of it is handle. The blade is about 1/4" thick and just under 1" wide. I made it from an old tool for a lathe. The steel is a bit hard to sharpen but it holds an edge very well. I fitted it with scales as bulk isnīt really an issue for me. If I manage to make a good picture I`ll post it. I made that one because I couldnīt find a suitable commercial product.

How much use do you get from your Victorinox Midnite MiniChamp II? I have one of those myself, and every time I pulled it out for a task, I felt like I should be using something bigger.
Also, no comments about wearing the Wave on your belt?

Just one: a Victorinox Rambler.
However, if I wear a hip pack, I'll toss in a Leatherman Wave or T.R.U.E. multitool...or - very, very rarely - a Kershaw/Ken Onion Leek.

Just a micra when I go to school. Otherwise, a medium-sized SAK (2 blades, corkscrew, awl, can opener/small screwdriver, bottle opener/ medium screwdriver, toothpisck and tweezers)
I used to carry a wave on my person, but didn't get much use on the street, so it now travels in my backpack.

You actually use those tiny tweezers? I like Uncle Bill's Sliver Grippers much better.
What kind of office do you work in that everyone carries a multitool?

The T.R.U.E. multitool is a sub-3 oz model sold in the U.K. I did a review of one for backpackgeartest.org that you can read here.

I work at a University in the Environmental Health and Safety group, where I am in charge of the radiation safety division. We cover several campuses and a hospital, and you never know what you are going to have to do around here. I have used my multitool for everything from opening packages to fixing a radiation survey instruments to tearing apart large pieces of scientific equipment in order to recover radioactive sources or lead shielding. They come in very handy in this setting, which is probably why everyone carries one, even my boss, the Director of EHS, and he is more of a coat and tie person.
And yes, the tweezers on the minichamp aren't the best, but I have had SAKs around so long I am really used to them, and they are handy to carry around that way. I suppose if I were to look into a better option I might prefer it, but I don't use them very often, and I have better tweezers in my FAKs, which are usually nearby.
Have a great weekend!

well, let's see ....
Two is a minimum : - a Leatherman Juice C4 is in my EDC pouch, on my belt ; - an Emerson mini-CQC7 in my rear right pant's pocket ;
Then ... - when travelling (by car mainly) or going into town at night, I like to have a Fred Perrin's "griffe" (claw) around my neck, as a concealed backup - when a picnic (or an office party, where slicing salami is my job) is planned, I add a nice looking - and nice cutting - Le Thiers knife (folder, 3.5 inches blade) in its leather sheath, at my belt, right side. - concealed in the car, within hand reach, a Laci Szabo Kerambit is supposed to be usefull as a "rescue knife" ... - when backpacking, either a fixed blade (custom knife - it has to see the outdoors sometimes) in its sheath is hanging from my belt or an Emerson Commander is in my right front pocket. This being in addition to the Outdoor Wedge II, strapped to the left shoulder strap of the rucksack. The Le Thiers knife, useful for sausage slicing, is then inside the rucksack, with the "food module".
I recently removed a Spiderco knife card from my wallet (too heavy - too easily forgotten when travelling by plane, a PITA to remove it in front of the security staff, at the airport ...)
I guess that's it .....

My name is Ray and i have a pocket knife problem, oop's wrong board. My EDC is a supertool, a micra, and a spiderco delica. For the last few days i have replaced the delica with a superknife, www.superknife.com I managed, after many years of trying, to snap a quarter of an inch off the end of the delica a couple of weeks ago. You know the old saying "if you are going to be stupid, you have to be tough". Which is probably why i don't usually carry a more expensive knife on a daily basis.

A Sebenza clipped to front pants pocket (small at work, large on the weekends), and a small Wenger SAK (better scissors than the Victorinox) in watch pocket in jeans, back pocket otherwise. (This also has white Photon II attached.)

May I ask how you clip it to your front pants pocket? Every time I've clipped either my Spyderco Cricket or Dragonfly to any pants pocket, they wind up falling off/out by the end of the day.

On the Web everyone is faceless and ageless. I remember being 17 myself, but since I'm 42, Holy Cow, you could be my son.
When I was in high school, no one cared if you carried a pocketknife. The authorities were worried only about switchblades! The worst thing you could do was be caught smoking (plain old cigarettes) in the rest rooms.
Times sure have changed, and not for the better.

If you need smaller flat and phillips screwdrivers, I'd suggest looking at the Swiss-Tech MicroPlus ( http://www.keychain-tools.com/st_microplus.asp). I carry one every day.

At the school I go to, personal craft knives (utility blades?) that the art and design students NEED to use for their projects have been banned after a boy at another school was stabbed. Only the 'school' craft knives may be used, in a classroom, and only in the presence of a teacher.
<<Start of sarcastic rambling>> Interesting thuohg, that a harmless, 6 inch pair of scissors is still allowed to be carried as part of our stationery. But then of course, nobody would ever dream of using scissors as a weapon <<end of bitter, sarcastic rambling)

I am down to a swisstool RS on my hip and a Spyderco Military in my right front pocket. I used to have mySAK huntsman and a Leatherman Micra as well, but I slimmed down to those two.

most folks, incuding some teachers think that any blades at school is not allowed, but nobody wrote it in that little book with school rouls <img src="images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> thank fully some teachers arent that stricked, one teacher will even sharpen your SAK's, atleast that what i have heard. That guy is not going to sharp mine !

Hmmmm. I think I'll have a look in the school rules to check that out. I had to write them out once or twice <img src="images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />, and I don't recall seeing anything about knives or blades. But then again, I might have to write those rules out again for "disobeying an unwritten rule"... (this is where I leave the keyboard and devise several systems for causing havoc within the school safety regulations...)

i do have to say that i carry barly anything at school ( swisscard and wenger exsecutive ), which don't look to threathning. Just incase unwriten rouls will get me in to trouble.
local law does say that if you have any cutlery in a situation where it use can only be to hurt someone, you are breaking the law, now lets hope that police officers arent that single mindend that they will take action agians carring a SAK at public places.

Reasons for carrying a knife:
1) For emergency purposes (I am a St John Cadet, and chairman of the fisrt aid society at my school. I have membership cards to validate this)
2) As a utility blade
The law here implies that you may carry a knife on the street. If you use a knife in any offensive/threatining/defensive manner, it is termed a dangerous weopon. In fact, it will be traeted legally with the same consequences as a firearm.
I feel underdressed without a knife or blade of some sort. I feel that, legally, I have a right to carry a knife. Still thouhg, the law is not the main issue. it is the interpretation of the law by the other attorney that worries me <img src="images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I'd be tempted to keep, say, the Micra around for deployment in situations where PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER. might be present, like in an office setting. You don't have any problems taking out your Spyderco in any of your environments?

Well, I either wear jeans or khakis. I put the knife in my right pocket all the way to the right of the pocket. I don't have any problem with being jabbed in the stomach because it's more on my hip. I don't notice it any more than I notice my cell phone.

Craig,
I kind of "just don't care". The knife is large, yes but I am tall and it rides very well in your pocket. I dont take it out of my pocket unless I have to use it, and if I do, I put it back quickly. I dont carry it with me to areas that might not smile on it, like a club or popular bar or church, but being a Marine and an avid outdoorsman, it doesnt get any different looks and I dont draw attention to it.
Plus I just dont care if anyone has a problem with it. If they do, I just leave. No use in getting it taken away from me.
I hope this answers your question.
Garrett

The link to picture in the original post doesnīt work any more <img src="images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Since I canīt edit the original post, I post it again (just in case someone still wants to see it). The unit for the folding rule is centimeter.

I'm replying here because of the PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER. comment. I carry a Kershaw liner for that very reason. It has a good blade, but has a more harmless executive look. It is lightweight and rugged. My other pocket knife is a Bar Creek 2" lockback attached to my key chain. It's my boxcutter and don't care if I scratch it up knife. Regards, Keys

I have a Kershaw Silver Spur I & II that I carry when I've got a shirt and tie on.
I made the PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER. comment because I was helping to break down a huge stiff cardboard box at the office. The other guy was using a pair of scissors, and badly. The right tool for the right job, I always say.
Anyway, I pulled out my Spyderco Dragonfly and made short work of that box.
Boy did the comments fly. The speed at which I broke down the box, contrary to hacking at it with dull scissors, initiated the comments. It was stuff you don't want to hear, such as, "Hey, you could kill someone with that," or "Can I borrow that for my meeting with the boss" (he was within earshot but didn't pick up on it).
Now the Dragonfly stays where it is, unless there's a real emergency.

I am a school teacher(shop) and I always have at least one pocketknife and a folding multitool knife on me. I also keep a nice hunting knife in the truck and usually have a utility knife in my office for doing various types of jobs. Of course, if I need to, I can always use a skilsaw or chainsaw.

I know exactly what you mean regarding comments. I've actually convinced someone that my Kershaw liner was an executive letter opener. Appearance is everything. BTW, cardboard will dull a knife very quickly. Regards, Keys

One of these days, I'm going to have to find out how one would sharpen a Spyderco Dragonfly and Cricket (both pain edge).
Now I try to carry the Cricket at the office, but use only my Midnite MiniChamp II (tiny thing looks more like a toy) or my custom-made folder in public (when someone is watching).

Greg, & everyone: I have never been told that I could not carry a knife at school but I really do not know if other teachers have been told not to or not but most male teachers I know carry a pocket knife. My multi-tool pliers are appreciated by several of the other teachers because I have used them to help them. If you think about it though, Home Ec has many more accessible blades than anywhere else. I even have paring knives etc, for cooking for various events during the year.

The MiniChamp gets used all the time, but really, I think I'm going back to a Classic because of the width factor. The things I use the most are the regular blade (for box opening), the scissors for all kinds of stuff (but mainly nail trimming!), the light (for keyholes in the dark), the toothpick ('cause I have funky teeth), and the tweezers (which the MiniChamp doesn't have). Occasionally I also use the pen (but this is not particularly important to me). Oh, the MiniChamp does have a bottle opener...
I don't usually wear the Wave on my belt because it's too heavy for that and I don't like the appearance of too much stuff hanging from my belt. As I'm a technology consultant, I have a lot of gear to carry already, but also, people don't generally care when I am wearing the Wave, because it mostly gets used to open equipment boxes (knife and #2 philips). So mostly I carry it in my briefcase.
Sorry about the late reply, I haven't been on in a few weeks...

Daily I just carry one, my Gerber AR 3.00 BBS but if I'm going anywhere that's not pretty close to my house I will add on my trusty LeatherMan Wave, but if I'm traveling to somewhere like Walmart or K-Mart I might just strap on the BK&T for good measures. <img src="images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I always carry my victorinox Champ. Even to school. I tried not too but I didnt have anything to peel my orange with. Anyway as soon as I need a knife my right hand automatically goes to my back-right hip and when it is not there... Basically just irritating. As well when I am cooking (Its the only cooking knife I've got-its the only knife I brought with me from portugal) I use it. Which I do strait from school

In the UK we would be in deep trouble if we were found with four knives on us. Even one can land you in serious trouble. I try to get round this by carrying a Wave (which looks more multi-use) and in an 'enhanced first aid kit' I carry a small locking folder. Obviously when you're in the wilds you can get away with a lot more.

Well that explains hard time I got in Amsterdam... I was waiting at the corner for a friend of mine and two cops approached me and asked me what's on my belt.I was carrying Wave and small Boker so I told them. They were strict about it and told me that it was illegal and I should remove them. I took them off and threw them in my backpack. They explained to me that I have no need for a knife in the city. Maybe it was me standing on the empty street on the corner after dark or maybe it really was the law but I've seen nobody wearing anything on their belts. Still I found it weird but gave no argument since I was a guest in their country.

Basically anything that the Police can prove is being carried as an "offensive weapon" is taboo - e.g. knitting needle, screwdriver etc. It's totally barmy. They're talking now about restricting air-rifle sales to over 17s and banning you from carrying them anywhere in public (where they already have to be in a case) "without good cause" - notice the emphasis is on you to prove good cause, not on the Police to prove you're a nutter.

In hunting around on the Web, I found plenty of cool keyring defense type items police on either side of the pond would not hesitate to confiscate. Someone else suggested carrying a simple double-AA Maglite instead. It is obviously a flashlight and you don't have to think up a reason for carrying it. I LIKE the Maglite idea. That's where I'm heading.

I carry a leatherman juice Kf4 on a lanyard made from a star knot sennet. I think this would make a reasonably good mace. And it is legal as the juice blade is 3" and doesn't lock.

hasn't the legal age for buying air weapons always been 17? i was under the impression that it was. same with carrying them in public, you've always needed a valid reason to carry them.

Well I know one thing about air rifles/pistols is that here in New Jersey you need a permit to but one even if you well over 17, and the chances of getting one in I think (I may be wrong) under at least 3 months isn't going to happen. New Jersey is definitely not a good place for any weapons.

Usually just two: a Leatherman Wave on my belt and a small SAK (a Wenger "Classic') on my key chain. I'll occasionally supplement these with a Spyderco Endura if I know I'm going to traveling through somewhat 'questionable' areas.
I'm still looking to replace the SAK with something a little more versatile; especially now that it's primary function (scissors) has been supplanted by the Wave. I may look at a slightly bigger SAK or perhaps a Leatherman S4 Squirt.
I bought a Buck 'Minibuck' tool in a moment of weakness, thinking that it might replace the SAK. What a piece of garbage that was!

Check out: http://www.met.police.uk/firearms-enquiries/airguns1.htmIts an offence to give (including sell) an airgun to anyone below 14, not 17 (currently). You can (currently) carry an airgun (not a pistol) in public in a paper bag if you want as long as its not loaded or cocked for whatever reason. Note from the MET site that the proposed laws will change this significantly and you will be a criminal. Lets all take a moment to lament the fact that Britain used to win tons of Olympic Golds for shooting but now we're regulated (and relegated) to the minor league...ordinarily, responsible shooters aren't responsible for criminal shootings - that's the scum holding illegal weapons, but we all suffer.

After reading this post and going through my various pockets... I realize that I may need help.... I carry 5 blades in various sizes and shapes. I have always carried a pocket knife since my very first Barlow that my Dad gave me when I was like 9 years old. Currently I carry a Buck Odyssey liner lock w/ a 3" blade. I keep it tucked in my waist band in the small of my back. On a key ring "tool/survival kit" i carry a Leatherman Micra, and a Schrade lock back w/ a 2-1/4" blade. On my VW keys I carry a small SAK like knife made by Buck, small blade, scissors, etc. Then in my wallet I have a fiberglass thumb dagger or lapel knife. I don't ever remember thinking about carrying all of these. It has just kind of happened that way! Anyway, whenever I turn out my pockets for bed, my wife just shakes her head.... (But guess who is the first person to ask for something on my ring or to borrow my knife!) <img src="images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

I used to empty my pockets and hang up my pants before bed, but I gave that up. Here's why: What if you suddenly have to leave your house in the middle of the night because of a chemical spill, or maybe the smoke alarms go off.
I don't know about you, but I'm not at my best at 3 AM, I'm at my worst.
I keep a lot of stuff in my pockets, and trying to remember what to take when I've just been rudely pulled from sound slumber...well, I couldn't do it.
My wallet contains much of my life, and should I not remember to grab it when I'm trying to catch the cat, things would be from bad to worse.
My solution is to take off my jeans -- and leave them in a heap on the floor right next to the bed. That's right. I take care of turning out the pockets in the morning, when I'm wearing different pants or whatever.
If something goes wrong in the wee hours of the morning, I slide out of bed, pull my jeans on, and I'm ready to roll. I've got my wallet, ID, money, and credit cards.
As far as pocketknives go, I'm caught in an eternal struggle. I'm always adding and subtracting and so forth. I really don't use that much on a daily basis.
I currently carry in my jeans a custom-made two-bladed folder that is a work of art as well as a knife, a Victorinox Midnite MiniChamp (it's useful and looks like a toy), and my SwissTool R/S is on my belt.
In my jacket pocket a convenience keychain holds a Leatherman Micra. I don't call it a survival keychain because my needs are not "survival" oriented in the true sense of the word. It really is a matter of convenience.
I like having the SwissTool around because every so often I really need a pair of pliers. Also every so often, someone needs heavy duty cutting and the MiniChamp won't cut it, so to speak. The SwissTool never offends anyone. They "ooh" and "ahh" over it and marvel at its sturdiness.

It's more of a novelty than anything else really. I used to work in a press room for a printing company where a plain edge blade is just another tool. When I transferred into the office I thought I was going to be lost, But as it turned out, there was another Gentleman who had a lot of the same interests as me. He seen my Solitare hanging out of my pocket and asked, when I pulled it out and he seen the rest of my "EDC Tool Kit" <img src="images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> He just smiled and pulled out his! When Christmas rolled around we all drew names for the dreaded Christmas Office Party, he drew mine. The day of the party I had to go visit a customer in the worst snowstorm PA has last winter. I had an accident that morning, and I was in the foulest of moods. I got back late around 10 pm to the office and on my desk was a small package. In it were two clear plastic pressure sheaths and a lapel dagger. It made my whole day. So maybe thats why I carry it. I don't know. But it makes me smile and I think it's just plain cool. It is a copy of the lapel daggers that Brittish spys used in WWII. Small, the whole thing in the sheath is about 4". The blade is about 2.5" and the "handle" just under 1.5". I sewed one of the sheaths to a piece of card stock and have it a credit card slot of my wallet. I could take a picture and send it to you but I don't know how to post it. <img src="images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

hmm ;looks like the lapl knives that they used to issue to the SOE (special opperations executive) in WW2. the original ones were made by mappin and webb i believe, a london based jewler to the royal familly no less. i think thats what i read in a large book on the SOE and its wartime opperations. apperently they used to do things like test fire silenced weapons across the dining hall without telling the dinners, in order to check the effieiency of the silencer at damping the noise! steve

I love that they actually proclaim "DO NOT CARRY THIS ON AN AIRPLANE! "
First, you'd be an idiot to try it, and second, I believe such an act would be a felony.

I don't think four is too many, lol. I carry a Victorinox in my right front pocket and a German issue folding field knife on my belt. I also carry a Leatherman on my belt. When I put my vest on, I have a Buck stowed in one of the pockets.
