Dog Walking Gear
Most days Ziggy (my Jack Russell Terrorist, I mean Terrier) and I take a morning walk around our small town, occasionally through the local park, but usually on the sidewalks. Since the walks are basically under an hour I don’t need a lot of gear but wanted to carry a minimal set of useful items. I purchased a Nite-Ize Pock-Its and stuffed it full of what I think would be useful in an urban setting.
I also carry a small canister of pepper spray, a whistle and a stout walking stick and the ever present cell phone. I don’t normally carry my wallet or a watch,
Loaded Pock-Its
Contents:
Mini-mag with 1 watt LED and IQ tail cap, lithium AA’s
Doug’s RS Mk5 knife
Mini-FAK in the RS Mk5 tin
Buck ‘Extractor’ multi-tool (knife, pliers, screwdrivers, and file)
Pencil and paper
BIC lighter
ResQMe
2x2 gauze pads in a plastic bag
Pair of exam gloves
FAK
Contents:
Assorted adhesive bandage strips
Packet of burn gel
Closure strips
Large non-stick pads
Antiseptic wipes
Benadryl
Advil
Aspirin
Non-aspirin (Ibuprofen)
Insect sting wipe
Alcohol wipes
Paper-based adhesive tape (not shown) wrapped around a piece of drinking straw
Doesn’t weigh much and the Pock-its has a very sturdy belt attachment. Since I’m never more than a few minutes walk from home there’s no need to carry water or food. If we go out to a state park to walk I take a large pack with water for both of us, food and some emergency shelter items.
The dog pack Ziggy carries has two cups of dog food in ziplock bags (mostly to add weight so that he’s actually ‘working’), bags to clean up after him and a spare leash. In the winter he has an overcoat and booties.
Anything else y’all might recommend for a stroll with your mutt?
PS. With a JRT there’s no such thing as strolling, every moment is heart attack waiting to happen… SQUIRREL!!!!
