Don't forget, if the flies aren't working for you, you can always slip a grub or a worm over that hook.
There's a stretch of river here that is now fly-fishing only, catch and release. Years ago, it was fly-fishing only, but you could keep the trout. I can't tell you how many people got pinched for slipping a piece of bait over the fly.
