Following this story she has been missing since Nov 16, 2008
She told a friend where she was going but, changed her mind her car was found at a week later at a different trailhead.

Tell people where you are going and DON'T change your mind without informing someone

For some reason, I occasionally think about this woman, Rose Bauhaus, and for a while I googled her name to see if they had found her yet.

Well, they found her in April.

"Rosalie Ann "Rose" Backhaus, 53, of New Castle tried to line her garments with plastic to stay warm and probably lived a couple of days in the cold conditions, said Emery County, Utah, Sheriff Lamar Guymon.

"Three hikers found Backhaus' body in a narrow slot canyon in the upper Chute Canyon area near Goblin Valley State Park, about 60 miles southwest of Green River."

She was found 120 miles from her car. I just don't think she intended to go that far, so I suspect that she lived more than a few days. Ten miles a day in that country would be a good day.

Don't get complacent. Be careful. Use your head. Keep some gear with you.

Wow. 120 miles lost.
Kinda makes you wonder. That is a lot of territory she covered before dying.

If she had taken a GPS, map and compass, or other navigation aids she might have made it back to her car.
If she had taken a PLB, left notes, marked her back trail, stopped and waited to be found, lit a smoky fire for the searchers or done many other things she might have been found in time.

Ten miles a day is phenomenal mileage for a lost person. Especially if you think she might have been doing some wandering and back tracking as she traveled.

Wow, I took a look at a terrain map of the area and it looks like a pretty rugged area. It's sad to hear that things ended that way.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm sure most of that mileage was accomplished early on before she was weakened by hunger and exposure. It makes me think she really had a strong will to live to go that far. A map and compass could have made such a huge difference. frown

120 miles is quite some going.

It is very common for people to panic and take to their feet once they realise they are lost.

If in that situation it is important to stop once you realise you are lost and calm your panic. In most cases it is best to stay put and wait for rescue rather than try and walkout. If you have left a trip report with someone, once you are late back they will raise the alarm and help will be on its way to you.

I'm looking at a map of Utah - it looks like 120 miles by road from Moab (her last known address) to the parking lot where her car was found. I don't think she walked 120 miles from her car to where she was ultimately found. Utahans who feel otherwise please speak up...

I am not Utahan but on the map Chute Canyon,Utah is just to the west of Goblin Valley State Park and only measures about 12 miles to the parking lot at Highway 24.
I think the 120 miles could be a typo or it could be a confusion between measuring how far her car was from her home or how far it was from her body.
