Found a great place for my Ritter MK5, stashed in the inside compartment of my Tilley hat, along with the cash and emergency credit card I stash in there!

Terrific idea!

Reminds me I need to find my Tilley.

I know it's around here, somewhere.

I call this my "I've lost everything but what's on me" kit.

In total I had in there sealed in waterproof plastic.
1 Credit Card
1 Photo ID
1 $20.00 bill
5 $1.00 bills
1 Printed paper with home and cell numbers for friends and family, with the "800" number and account code for a 400 minute pre-paid calling card.

Even with the MK5, you can't tell it's there and because Tilley's have a foam liner in there to make them float, there is no imprint on the top of the hat for anyone else to see.

When I need to have my head sharp, I usually just use caffiene. *laughs*

Just a thought but I would advise against storing anything really important in your hat. In my experience, hats are lost more frequently than any other piece of hiking gear. So while it might work as a yet another backup I wouldn't personally rely on any last-ditch kit stored in my hat.

I had a play with this idea a while back smile

20mm button compass x 1.
Tinder-Quick x 5.
Puritabs x 5
Zip-loc or freezer bag, 1L capacity x 1
Elastic bands x 2 (to seal the bag with).
Lifeboat matches x 5-10, or mini-bic lighter x 1.
Hooks x 5, split shot and 40ft spyderwire (optional).

Whole lot is sealed in a freezer bag. To protect it.

I have also replaced the chin strap/headband with 550 cord.

Credit card's and money is an interesting idea, but I'm more concerned about staying warm and having safe water to drink.

And there's the old trick of having a blade on the top of your hat. so they think you are surrendering, when actually you are reaching for a weapon. a korean has a tiny pistol there in the film 'Men In War' (worth seeing by the way).

I don't. I have a Bison capsule with the same cash and info' sheet on my neck rig with my RAT Izula, and a 3rd one on my keyring.

(The little flashlight is held on with one of those magnetic jewelry connectors, so it can be removed when I need just a light)

This rig and hat are more for just walking around town everyday, not outdoors stuff. I'm working on something like yours for my other Tilley that is more geared to fishing and hunting.

I often carry a large plastic garbage bag in my climbing helmet
as an emergency rain coat, or if chilly a light fleece hat.

Years ago when I used to fight forest fires I carried a large plastic sealed pressure bandage and a bic lighter taped to the inside of my helmet above the suspension carrier.

Why the lighter? Sounds like you had all the fire you needed, right?

Just kidding

If the presence of the items in the hat present a problem with them being felt or extra bumpy then I would suggest adding another thin layer of foam to the hat. I generally keep a comb and a Fresnel lens in my everyday T6 Tilley. I also have a T3 that I find more appropriate for camping.

Wow, talk about customer service, I thought CRK&T was sending me a new sheath for my MK5, but they just sent me a whole new knife, sheath and tin!

World of difference, the sheath for the new one, holds both MK5's very well!!!
