Unfortunately for those of us that venture off-road the hitch mounted carriers are usually a non-starter. They knock your departure angle down to something similar to my wife's minivan.

I've seen folks chain them to trees and leave them in camp but securing anything
on them remains problematic. A truck box bolted to one of the hitch mounted carriers is about as secure a solution as I have seen.
