Here's a question for you: How many of you have used a dial telephone? How many of you don't know what I'm talking about when I say dial telephone?

Still have one in the basement.

We had a small B&W TV in the basement of my parents house with a wire going out the bulkhead window to a pair of rabbit ears nailed to the side of the house. I remember watching the landing, in the afternoon, and then having mom wake me up late at night to watch them come out of the LEM. It was around 11pm, which was waaay past bedtime back then. Still, I think mom & dad knew that this was going to be a pretty significant event, so my brothers and I were all up for it.

When I think about it today, I am amazed that we were able to do that with the technology of the 60's. A thousand years from now, it may be the most significant accomplishment of our era. It's the first time humans left our home world to explore another.

When I was a kid, we had one telephone in the house - A dial telephone at the end of the hallway. I don;t think we got a push-button until I was a senior in high school...if then. A cordless was unheard of, as were answering machines. Of course, back then we had to walk 6 miles to school.....in the snow....barefoot.... ((( laugh )))

Tuy Hoa AFB, RVN. Watching AFVN on small b/w tv. I can remember it vividly...

I grew up in the Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield era. Test pilots and later Astronauts were SUPERMEN to me.

Was still fairly young but i do remember watching it on TV.

And just to one up Art how many people here have used a hand cranked cash register? Worked in an old time hardware store and it had a hand cranked cash register that was in daily use until 2000. People were always amazed that someone still knew how to count change without having a computer tell them how much to give back. And we also had a dial telephone until about 1995.

You forgot to add the requisite "up hill, BOTH ways!" Grandpa.

The Canadian survey system in the 1880-1910 era made sure all kids were no further than 4 miles from the nearest school so 1-room schools literally dotted the landscape! Grandpas couldn't claim they walked more than that distance.

Rotary dial, 4 digits dialling, and party lines! I think all three died in the early 70's in my local.

I was in a BOQ in Okinawa, waiting for our flight the next day to return stateside after being in Okinawa for 2 years. Little did we know that we would lose an engine over the Pacific and have to make an emergency landing on Wake. I can still hear the roar of the room air conditioners in the BOQ.
