For me it was a family outing. We went picnicking at a local park. My dad, brother and I were walking around the park and came across a kiosk selling various goods. The owner had a little B&W TV suspended on a shelf, the 4 of us watched in awe as the LM landed on the moon. What a moment!

But it wasn't until a couple hours later after we arrived back at home that we watched the actual descent of Armstrong/Aldrin down the ladder and onto the surface... Incredibly awesome. Even as a little 9-year old, I knew how historic it was and dreamt of someday of also going into space. Back then, everything I did was about space. I built plastic models of the SM/Capsule circling the LM, I read books and books and watched every space mission, every minute. Even though Armstrong himself doesn't consider himself a hero he was every bit of one to me.

"One small step for (a) man, One giant leap for mankind!"
- Neil Armstrong.

Note: The "a" was said by Armstrong but the mike apparently did not pick it up.

In the apartment below ours watching Mike trying to finish his LEM model before Armstrong stepped out into history. Can't remember if he did.

I was almost 11, living in Ft. Hood, Texas. I mowed lawns for $1, front and back (these were the large, military, un-fenced yards!!)

I can;t remember watching the moon landing, though I probably did with my folks.

I still remember camping out in front of the old B&W TV set for most of a day and acting as remote control, which hadn't been invented yet, to adjust volume, rabbit ear configuration and vertical hold. Imagine that. A historic event on TV and to work the controls you had get up and walk to the TV set. Or get your kid to do it.

67 and 68 were tough years. America, and the rest of the world, were in need of some good news. A man on the moon was celebrated by virtually everyone. A real milestone for humanity.

Makes me feel a little old.

Here's a question for you: How many of you have used a dial telephone? How many of you don't know what I'm talking about when I say dial telephone?

I love old rotary phones. My parents just stopped using theirs in about 1998.

That said, in July '69 my mom was in high school, and my dad was in Navy Basic. I was a proverbial gleam in his eye. grin

I was 8 and on summer break from school. I honestly don't remember if I watched it live or if I have just seen it so many times that it seems like I saw it live. In actuality, I was probably playing baseball down at the school with my buddies.

Oh, and yes, I have used a rotary dial telephone. smile
