Rockports, if it hasn't already been stated, are owned by Reebok who puts their running shoe gel 'DMX' (?) and other running shoe technology into their dress shoes. It is a great feel.

I have found a few pairs of Red Wing shoes that have stood up well and are comfortable for walking. I have had the problem of very grippy soles on climbing boots wearing out on concrete because they achieve their grip by using a soft composition rubber.
I find the hiking boots that are hard enough in the soles to last on concrete are less than ideal for ice or the wet steel. It ends up being a compromise.
You might like to get in touch with a Red Wing dealer and check out some of the new composition soles.

Personally I like air-tac by ridge. Or just about any "combat boot" that's been designed for police/rescue services.

I've had *really* good luck with ECCO's. Very comfortable and durable.

I've worn a number of different brands. Rockports were okay, for me they felt a little too light in weight, so I felt like I had on slippers. I used to wear rubber soled Johnston & Murphy and Timberland "split-toe" mocs for work. So long as the shoes fit well and had rubber soles, I felt like I could walk in them. If you wear any hard soles, keep a pair of rubber-soled shoes on hand, in case you have to walk out.

I walked from below Wall Street to almost Woodside Queens during the 2003 blackout in a pair of Timberland "work casual" shoes. I got a good blister, took acold shower, changed an headed back into Manhattan on foot.

Shoes are a REALLY personal thing. A few years back, my feet changed - grew in my 40s! Before that, I knew exactly what fit me, the socks I likes ets - I wanted a size 10.5 EE built on a Fairmont last - yes, I even knew what last fit me the best. What was amazing was that certain shoe stores (no, not chains) actually knew what lasts certain shoes were made on, and could say "try these"

After walking all over Copenhagen, as well as large portions of the Danish and Swedish countrysides, I can attest to Rockports being a shoe that is still comfortable after five or ten miles of walking. I can definitely say that is not the case with every shoe I have ever worn.
