Does anybody know a good site to download images of the hazardous material placards from?
Even a poster would be good. It is just to familiarize some friends with the system. Kind of a general awareness thing.

I'm not sure how useful it is for your stated purpose but The Emergency Response Guidebook 2008 might be helpful. We carry these in our patrol units.

I searched for "Hazmat Poster" on Google Image Search:

http://www.hz.genium.com/shoppingzone/shop-hz-posters.php

I like the one that says "Hazard Warning Symbols"

There are also ones for the NFPA Diamond.

Are they standard between USA and Canada?

The ones that SAY what they are are simple to understand.

So what are those removable square number placards that you see on trucks (esp tankers) that say something like 1634 (I just made up that number)? It's obviously some kind of identification code for contents, but there's nothing with it to identify what it is. Ammonia? Chlorine? Ammonium Perchlorate?

Or is it the specific collection of hazards shown in the poster: 1) Explosive + 6) Poison + 2) Combustible + 4) Dangerous ?

The numbered placards are using an ID system, there is a reference book which correlates the number to a specific chemical/material.

The NFPA/diamond system uses the 1-4 numbering to indicate the relative safety factor of what's in the truck or in a building. That's a very simple explanation, it's pretty easy to find out more, do a google search.

You can obtain a copy of the guide book with all of the specific material codes at truck stops and thru bookstores. I'd probably do a google search for that too. I got mine at a truck stop in a nice small size that I keep in my vehicle.

Thanks Grouch. I never thought of the TDG manual from CANUTEC as a PDF download. It will be the perfect thing.
Not only will it help me explain the placard system but it will let me explain the UN and NA ID numbers too.
I am not trying to certify them for TDG, just to give them a heads-up and let them know why binoculars are good things to have with them on the road.

I believe so. Here's a quote from the guide that I linked to:

"The 2008 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG2008) was developed jointly by Transport Canada (TC), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the Secretariat of Transport and Communications of Mexico (SCT) and with the collaboration of CIQUIME (Centro de Información Química para Emergencias) of Argentina, for use by fire fighters, police, and other emergency services personnel who may be the first to arrive at the scene of a transportation incident involving dangerous goods."

Based on that, I'm guessing that the placards have the same significance in those geographic regions and they might be international (for cargo transported on ships and airplanes).

That's good to know.

If you don't mind stopping by a station...drop by a local EMS or FD station and tell them what you are interested in learning. They may sit with you and give you a bit of help. Also check your local library...they may have the books on hand.
