Does anyone have any experience with the 'new' off mosquito 'fan'? Does it 'really' work or just more hype?

"If it aint deet, it aint sheet" You are quite right. I always laugh to see all the various solutions to skeeters, but deet works great. I haven't grown a second head yet, but do have a bump on my shoulder that has potential...

So far all answers are as expected.....and what we surmised. Still it was worth asking. Thanks.

i laughed when i first saw this advertised on tv. my immediate reaction was that a user was going to have this repellent blown around them in an unhealthy manner.
from their website - see the third:
Caution-Hazards to humans and domestic animals:
* Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. * Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. * Avoid breathing vapor.
how does one keep a vapor off the skin, away from the eyes and clothing?
and i guess you need to hold your breath?
what are they thinking?

A bunch of guys on a mission in the pacific decided to use the newest thing in the early 90's, Avon's skin so soft. It was all the rage for mozzies. I stayed with my 100% DEET. Yeah it melts watch bands and ponchos but it keeps the pests away.
Not a week in, they were begging me for some DEET. I collected a lot of IOUs for cases of beer during that Op.
From personal experience, though not with this fan, candles don't work, noise don't work, wrist bands dont work, this or that don't work. DEET works.

Just do not forget the can of DEET in the door pocket of a vehicle. Two weekends ago one emptied itself while I was just leaving a parking lot (105 deg day).
Haven't had many bug problems in the truck, but I really didn't think I could get out of the truck fast enough.

I brought one with me to the Boundary Waters the first weekend in June.
In short, it works.
I'm a native Minnesotan and grew up with the skeeters. I don't like using any repellant and am of the sort who avoids it until I can't stand it any longer.
Weather that weekend was cooler than normal - highs barely touched 70, so the bugs weren't out that much to begin with. Though others in my party were constantly spraying the deet on. Had I not had the device with me, I don't think they (the bugs) were bad enough for me to use any deet.
The thing doesn't work well when you're moving around or in a breeze. But when it's still and you're sitting by the fire or in the hammock, it definitely works.
Takes about 10 minutes or so to kick in (build up a cloud of the insivible stuff around you). The fan makes a somewhat annoying whine, but I got used to it.
Not sure about health effects. There is no noticible odor.
Knowing what I know, and how I am about using deet, I would def. buy this again. Great alternative (situational) IMHO.
