I just recovered the empty Mainstay ration packaging from my tool kit. I was about to toss them out, when I realized they were in remarkably good shape. As an experiment, I filled one 3/4 full ( about 24 fl. oz.) of water, ducktaped the top and tossed in the freezer. I then let them defrost. there is no leakage. I have folded one up several times, slipped it under the paracord covering my kit for a day in my pocket. It still holds water. If you use any similar freeze dried packaging check it out as an alternative to a condom. They will burn readily and drop melting globules, so direct cooking over fire is out.

Interesting. I'm not familiar with Mainstay rations. Is this an outer packaging bag for an MRE type meal? Is it a heavy duty plastic or Vinyl?

Willie Vannerson
McHenry, IL

Could you use a vacumn sealer to create a new seal on the bag? Liquids are often difficult for vacumn sealers.

Packaging is an aluminum sandwiched with a mylar type plastic. They make pocket envelopes of water similar to that used by the military.
