Yeah, and Ridley Scott isn't even dead yet.
Alien is a classic. It doesn't need to be remade.

A VCR tape containing "Alien" and "Aliens" was a perennial favorite for movie nights. Completely different movies, but both well made.
I really don't object to them remaking "Alien". The original will remain, at least to my mind, the definitive version but if someone thinks they can do it better I don't see any point in expending energy to stop them.
I just hope that the new version doesn't become the only version available. As reference for a friend interested in holding out in an urban setting, and just plain entertainment value, I tried to find "Fort Apache the Bronx" but it had been replaced with the lame remake, "Assault on Precinct 13". The first is a pretty decent depiction of defense in-depth of a building against a determined foe using limited available resources. It also works as solid entertainment. The later version is a adventure fantasy devoid of any practical use beyond a failed attempt at making a movie.
If a remake of "Alien" makes the original unobtainable I will be disappointed. Even more so if the remake is not as good as the original.

Alien is a classic. It doesn't need to be remade. They aren't remaking Alien, they are making a prequel. And as I understand it, Ridley Scott is involved, albeit not as director. Here's a comment from Ridley's brother.

I'v just watched the latest Star Trek Intrepid Film. You can download it here for free; http://www.starshipintrepid.net/dl_episode4.htmI believe Hollywood has a Star Trek film out now as well. 'Alien' remake! Could it be any worse than the 'Italian Job' remake?

Remaking "ALIEN" is just as much of a crime if they decided to remake "Strange Brew". Both classics in their own right; IMHO.

I disagree, there's plenty of imagination it's just misplaced. There are many, many, many, creative and talented writers and others with great ideas for films, television shows, etc. What's lacking is courage and imagination in the corporate offices where the people who sign the checks live.
Ironically, one need only look at some of the newest commercials to see where a lot of the talent is working. There are some major film directors who go "slumming" to make commercials because they're given a lot of latitude and until recently, some pretty amazing budgets. I've worked on commercials which had budgets that shamed some feature length films.
As for original stories, there are only what, 12 story lines in the world? It's all about how you use the elements at hand when you're telling yours.

I'm glad it's not a remake, but sequel or prequel, I only liked The Original "Alien" and the original sequel "Aliens". Every other film with the H.R. Giger Alien in it has been a tremendous disappointment, including the AVP films. Thanks for the info though.

Hmm, a prequel would start plugging the gap in the timeline between the AVP series and the original Alien movie. Well, they only have what, a couple hundred years or so of time to fill?
You know, you can beat something to death, even an Alien...
